Has anyone had experience with or heard any opinions of RS Bike Paint in the UK? I got their name from a post on the NOC site. I visited their website and find they supply candy red for the G15 (base coat, candy and clearcoat). I'm tempted to by some but I wonder how close a match it will be.
Also, I was under the impression that the P11 and the G15 shared the same candy red paint. RS lists different part #'s for the two. Does anyone know whether they were different?

Thanks,
Ed

Weren't some (?) of the G15's just a plain red. ?

Importing paint seems like an expensive idea, PPG etc etc could surely do it,
all they need is a sample to eyeball.
Silver flake basecoat and red top coat, and probably a tough clear coat.
Candy apple red is almost a stock color for choppers bobbers customs etc,
although the actual shade will need careful watching.

I just painted a lamp base using rattle cans, except that gas would probably
wash it straight off it looks about the same.
The more red you spray the darker it gets, so you need to have a sample to judge with.
And the size of the silver flake coat has much to do with the look of it too.
hopethishelps.

Thank you for the suggestions Rohan. Unfortunately I don't have a sample for PPG to match. I do have a formula that Billt posted. But, as far as I know, I would need to buy minimum quantities of each component and mix it myself. Doing it that way would cost more than importing it.

What about a local spray paint shop though. ?
Harley/custom guys keep them in business keeping it perfect, and a new color every month,
so they would likely have shelves of stock ready to go.
And doing a plain no frills scheme like a Norton ( no flames or skulls or splashes etc) isn't going to break the bank.

And, what type of paint do RS supply ?
Is is gas proof.
Can it be shipped to you - dangerous goods and all that.
Is it safe for home use (isocyanates need more than a mask).
?

Local paint supplier here stocks Spray Chief stuff, display in the corner, little tins of it ready to go.
More candy colors than a rainbow .....

Thank you again Rohan.

The RS paint is a urethane base and color coat and a non-isocyanate 2K clear.

P.S. Do you know what quantity of color coat would be needed for one bike assuming 2-3 coats of color?

hello RS paint are not the Best I use Nu-agane auto paint's Bedford UK the right way is tp paint its colour is silver base metallic and a Candy apple red lacquer see Nu-agane auto paints wed site and it's in acrylic paint urethane paints are household paints and crap for bikes Yours Anna J

So are you advocating cellulose paint here Anna. ?
AGAIN, cellulose is el cheapo, and NOT what Nortons used.

I can't quite recall what bike you are painting ?
If its not an Interstate, you might get away with a pint of each - if thats how they sell them.
A litre, if thats what they sell (~=2 pints) would likely be plenty - but its always better to have
some left over than to be a bit short.
Then you'll need another bike to use it up on...

Can they post paints, dangerous goods has clamped down on that, a lot,
folks just don't like their mail swimming in spilled paint.
Airlines hate stuff swilling around in their cargo hold, after the lid pops off in the low pressure.

Search this site for 'The P11 Thread' which I started here some years ago.

On page one you'll find the candy red mix in PPG, courtesy of Dave Campbell, an early P11 enthusiast.

One pint of each color should be enough to do two bikes - unless you screw something up.

Yes, Candy Red was the same for all AMC bikes, and this Campbell mix is a faithful copy. (I taped over the original candy red on my G15 tank in the bottom spine area, and it is indistinguishable)

Early G15/N15s were painted in AMC Cardinal Red, but the Candy Red is the most common color used on Matchless and Norton hybrids from '64-on.

My Ranger 750 and G15 have the same paint, but the G15 has the silver 'D' stripe, while the Ranger stripe is gold. (I actually masked off the base coat on the G15 and sprayed the candy before peeling off the masking tape to achieve my 'D' stripe). The can see this in my thread 'G15 Questions'
