Hello All- I am thinking of putting a Dunstall-type fairing on my Commando. I am a little bewildered as to what to get- can't seem to find any good advice on this, but I know you guys will steer me right. Pics and sources greatly appreciated- thanks! eric

I think they are all more or less the same, if you're talking about the Dunstall/Production Racer style.

Just be aware that you may lose some turning radius and expect some "fitting" to get everything to work.

Norvil do a kit.

I had one on an R75/5 ( waits for laughter to subside......) it does reduce the turning circle, work was needed to get it to sit low enough to look good and high enough for flatter bars. Riding position really needed rearsets.
I had a look at a Norvil here at an auction last year.....sure looks like a looooon reach to the bars, looked to be not a great street ride...imho.
There are also replicas of the mid 70's 900SS that would do the job, Guy here in NZ does a range of fibreglass http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 200386.htm
you can probably get something similar state side.

I got the Norvil proddy replica fairing a while back. Nice piece of work- needed a bit of fiddling and filing though . Very good mounting setup and excellent perspex. You will need to remove your VIN plate and relocate to the proddy location at the top rear of the frame spine otherwise it fouls the main subframe where it mounts to the steering head.

Thanks Gents for all the suggestions. The Norvil kit is pricey but nice- and the GFTP site is really nice also. Re: VIN plate, mine is a '68 so the frame is stamped rather than plated. I would imagine I will have to protect the stamped number from becoming fouled- maybe a thin sheet of rubber or something. Thanks again for the help- as always you guys are a source of some serious knowledge! ejd

Thanks

I can't remember what Kenny used on the 952. Is it an Olins like they use on the production bikes? The general direction for Norton American was to use the top shelf parts, so it wouldn't surprise me.

I find the best supplier for the Norton(Genuine Norvil)production race fairing is Mick Hemmings, look on Micks website you will get details and prices there and they ship worldwide.

I mounted an AirTech quarter fairing18 months ago and posted the results:

fairing-for-winter-riding-t5175.html

It's so comfortable I've yet to take it off. Perfect height for a straight-up rider like me (the windscreen comes up to my sternum), no cold blast on my chest, no buffeting at speed. Easy to install with the AirTech-provided kit. I chose the tallest fairing (set up for a BMW R11), but if you're of the cafe persuasion, give them a call, and check their website to find the model you like the best. A bit pricey, but the look and ease of installation and painting is first class.

My observations - The Norvil fairing mounts are the worst for restricted steering lock, Dunstall somewhat better, Ducati 900SS the largest (but you must make your own mounts. If you are not interested in originality and have some skill in fabricating, you can build a mount that will give reasonable steering lock. If you want to use flat or clubman bars, the Norvil fairing probably won't work. Judging from my beveldrive 900SS, that fairing is somewhat taller and maybe could be opened or raised enough to use them.

I have a Norvil with original mount on my cafe racer and the steering lock can be a PITA to turn it around in the garage and downright scary at times turning at walking speed. The Ducati is much more confidence inspiring with considerably more steering.

Thanks for the heads up- I have flat bars on it now, and steering is rather important to me... I have a bit of skill with fabrication but am not much of a welder, so I will probably buy a bracket. I appreciate the inside info !
