Question,
My Atlas from 1967 came with a swingarm that had chainguard bosses welded on above and below the swingarm. I think this suggest the ability to fasten a totally enclosed chain guard. Is this typical or might I have an arm from an earlier model?

My '63 Atlas, bought new from a dealer, is so fitted. I have never seen an Atlas fitted with a totally enclosed chaincase. My buddies BSA had aTEC, and I never knew him to change, or even adjust his rear chain. And it did not leak either!

If you ever find the parts, buy them and fit them.

I'll second that. My 63 BSA Super Rocket has a totally enclosed chain. I took the end cap off for a look after riding down some miles of very dusty gravel road. The bike was dirty all over but that enclosed chain looked like it had just come out of packaging, all shiny and new with lube everywhere.
There is an inspection port for oiling and chain adjustment but I never use it as the non sealed chain stays oiled by gearbox oil.
There is a slight weep at the transmission main seal and this works like a Scott Oiler. You might get 10 drops after 50 miles, something like that.
As Slick mentioned, adjustment is rarely if ever needed since everything is running clean and lubricated all of the time. This is very good for sprocket life as well.

Thanks. Interesting that the factory installed the bosses but never the enclosed chain case?

I belive that from the introduction of the Slimline frame in 1960 to 1962 (?) there was a Dominator Deluxe model that included side panels and an enclosed chain guard. I have a 66 Atlas frame/swingarm that has the same bosses you describe. According to what I've read from the NOC (UK) they just continued putting the bosses on after discontinuing the Deluxe.
