Triumph will introduce the rumored Speed Twin next year.

Thruxton 1200 HP motor
Thruxton standard front suspension
Brembo dual discs
Thruxton R aluminum swing arm
Mag wheels
T120 style fuel tank
handlebars not clipons
Hooligan-ish abbreviated rear tail.

They claim it's lighter than the Thruxton R.
Probably due to the mag wheels.

I'd be happy with upping the HP on the T120 and throwing on a better suspension. Either way, I'm enthralled.

I have been asking for T 120 with cast wheels, brembo etc.....”we don’t do that”
Well...looks like they do now!
Looks like a swap for my Sprint in the spring;)

And me with no room in my garage.
Now I have some hard decisions to make.;)

Maybe 1200 cc's, not 1200 horsepower?

It's Triumph's unfortunate terminology.

Triumph calls the Speed Twin's 1200cc motor "HP" the 1200cc High Power motor.
This is the "high" power motor that the Thruxton/Thruxton R get - 97 hp.
The T120 gets the lower power 1200 "HT" or High Torque motor - 80 hp.

My friend bought a Hayabusa so he could fine out what 170 BHP (or whatever) was like. He is an A-grade racer and so are his friends he rides with on Sunday Mornings. He found he could keep up with them by giving the 'busa a squirt between corners. But everywhere else, it was useless.
That T120 with the high torque motor would probably be the faster under normal circumstances. But you probably would not want to be going so quick around corners anyway.

Has anyone ridden the High Power and High Torque engines back to back?

I spoke to someone recently who thought the High Torque motor was infinitely superior!

I've never ridden one though... hence the question...

1200 HP should about do .

Anyone got 1/4 mile times 7 speeds from the dragstrip , from these things these days ?

And by the way , the word is obstreperous .

I haven't done a test ride yet but those I have spoken with have told me the real difference is at the top end.
The T120 (HT motor) makes its max torque 600-800 rpms lower than the HP motor, and pulls harder low down.
But the T120 runs flat at higher rpm - HP motor has better power on top.

According to Triumph the T120 has a heavier crank, Hi-torque cam timing.
The HP motor has lighter crank, higher performance cams.
Neither are fire breathing monsters, the HP motor just has better top end performance.

If you like cruising around town, or the super slab with wife and luggage, the T120 would probably be more fun.
If you like bouncing the tach needle off the rev limiter, the HP motor will be more fun.

Absolutely.
Very trick, but close to $5,000.
And spoils the classic looks of the motor.

It's all a bit misleading with the " Hi torque" designation.
It's actually a lower torque engine all the way thru( 2016-2018)

I have ridden both versions while out on tour. A friend owns a 2018 Bonnie t120.
We switched bikes for awhile.
We agreed that the Bonnie has ample power but feels very sedate in performance compared to the Thruxton R. A 1200 Bonnie would not lap the IOM at anywhere close to 109 mph, even with Steve Parrish flogging it!

It's heavier and has less power everywhere so the results are as expected.
I have not seen the torque curve for the latest t120.
Sounds like it's improved.

Here are the torquelines for the 2016-2018 bikes.
You can clearly see the Thruxton hp version has more torque everywhere when compared to the " Hi torque" Bonny version.

The blue lines show the old air-cooled 865 bikes.
