Vokes "D" Shape Air Filter

I have a 1962 single carb Atlas with the "D" shaped Vokes air filter mounted between the oil tank and the battery box. Does anyone know the best way to get to the filter to check or replace the filter element? Is my memory correct, the battery box side of the filter housing is the side that comes off to get to the filter element? Is there any way to get to this other than removing the battery box? (I'm guessing not, why would there be an easy way to do this).

Yes it's remove the battery box I'm afraid.

I use a filter from an early Austin Mini and cut it in half, fits perfectly.

I don't know if it is necessary, but i think it would be easier to remove the filter assembly as a whole.

I have the same set up on my 58 Domi 88 and I have to remove the battery box to get to it. A real pain in the ***!

For those who are interested I have attached photos of what I believe is an original filter element for the Vokes D shaped filter. This is a fairly substantial felt and wire mesh item. Also FWIW my single c

arb Atlas seems to require a spacer (not sure if this is original) between th front top mounting tab of the battery box and the frame tab that it attaches to. I say "seems" because the spacer on my bike is stamped "China" so obviously not original! OTH the battery carrier does not line up without it.
