Would anyone know if my 1962 Norton model 50 had left the factory with cadmium or zinc plated bolts, nuts etc David

I second Onder. Zinc plating, while effective against corrosion, is dull and fugly.

Some of the fastners would have been cadmium plated & others would have been dull/satin chrome. My 650ss left the factory early in '62, & was original when I aquired it from the first owner. It had both these types of plating. These days due to 'elf & safety/enviromental concerns Cadmium is difficult to get. Usually the only places still plating with it are aerospace & military contractors.

All the cad plating I have had done in the last ten years is very soft and wears off the fasteners in a few uses. Nothing like the yellow cad used on AN fasteners.

I zinc my own nuts and bolts if I want the dull look I don't add zing brightener to one of my solutions. if you want shiny add the brightener. You can dip you nuts in a Chromate to change the color of your zinc Blue, yellow, black..... to add extra protection. Cadmium is hard to come by these day because of the harsh enviro dangers.. Talk to your plater on what you want your outcome to be and they should have the easiest safest way to achieve your desired finish.

@jimbo

Your parts look a lot better than those of one of my industrial clients!! But then, that client was focused on corrosion resistance, not beauty.
