Hi

Feel the need to post, as I need to drive myself to get a few projects moving. I have a braced frame, broken gearbox cradle, swinging arm, etc
That are now being stripped of their plastic coating. Beside the gearbox cradle being broken, the coil carrier has cracked through, & I also want to put a couple of blobs on the frame, so that in the future (when it becomes my road bike) I can drop the z plates. Once the coatings off I will take some photographs then its off to the welder.
The swinging arm had the nuts welded to the ends of the arm but the bolts fitted don't locate on to anything on the pin? Just push against it! Should I drill locating holes?
I have a couple off well worn fairing, two tanks (standard & BIG) , a nicer seat unit. One side panel & an oil tank painted black on the inside & yellow on the outside! Access? Warm leg?
Just need to clean up a fork leg & finish making up a pair of forks. I don't have another pinch bolt side, so will be using a plain spindle with spacers both sides & nuts both sides.
Engine is my Mk3 electric start 850 engine, lots of good bits in it but a standard 4 speed box, although I think I have a close ratio 2nd 3rd gear?
This bike is going to use up a lot of my older stuff & as usual bits borrowed from other bikes. It is for Steve A to ride until he gets his short stroke finished.
I also have a low level 2 into 1 pipe from a Proddie racer, although that's pretty much unsilenced.
Nearly everything just the inclination, as I still have to strip & rebuild my race engines & see what went wrong with them.

Well, Chris, from your narration it seems you must have dozens of photos to post next up...

As we get older it becomes more difficult to keep the urge going. Your project sounds interesting. It is easy to build a bike which is fairly fast and re liable and have some fun doing it - keep up the good work. I just wish I wasn't so lazy myself, I've got my bike ready to fire up and ride however I can't seem to move myself as much as I love it.

Hi

Powder coating removed. Not a job for the faint hearted.
Thanks go to John for the use of his oven (very large

off to the welder next

very interesting, I look forward to more about your project as it progresses, thanks for posting it. :D :)

Interesting post. and good luck.

And hopefully this will be a good guidance point for all those who think that powder coating is the holy grail. Always seems to be more of a PITA, especially to patch, than good old enamel paint.

Hi

One large oven & a scraper! It has the most horrendous under coat that feels like flour! Next stage is to rub it down with wire wool.
The welder is going to do it on Tues/Wednesday. Then it will be off to be blasted & painted.
I dug out the fibreglass & a few bits from the pile. I may put the hacked about standard pipes on it & save the 2 into 1 for my roadbike!
Once I have found a set of supertrap discs!

Chris

supertraps with enough plates not to knock off power much add a good bit of mass on the end of silencers so extra stress on rubber type mounts and takes the puff balls away too. Just saying if not aware of already. Ok for spark arresting in dry woods use though.

Hi Hobot

On my race bike I run a Steve Maney 2 into 1 with the alloy silencer & all the plates! Extra rivets, Rubber bobbins above & below.
The bike is probably over 105 with the 750 but is well under with the 960.
However with the Proddie I may have to do something as a standard Commando can fail the noise test when running pea shooters.
The only original pea shooter silencer I have left is very heavy ie thick metal later ones are pretty thin & pattern ones!!! well.
Not sure what happened to internals over the years. Limit is 105DB
May try vw flutes in the end.
We will see when I get to that stage.
Long way to go yet
Chris

Might pay to do the blasting before the welding , in case it shows anything up .

Though media blasting isnt to abrasive , sand blasting can be agressive removeing material ( read Metal )
Hot Tanks - redi strip , the ones the rodders / restorers use to imerse car bodies are passive strippers
that dont errode , and will do the insides too - if theres bleed holes . Oil Tank etc at same time saves time .

Just a thought .

Hi

Right first off a photograph of the fibreglass. I actually quite like the large tank, although I was never sure about them when I saw photographs of them on the bikes???
Not sure which way I will go with the pipes as I may use the 2 into 1 on my road bike.

I have had a really kind offer from a member of this site offering his services to check the frame for straightness. I have thanked him & once I have managed to speak to him & arranged delivery etc I hope he will update you on what he finds. That way he can post & I will promote his service both with the club here in the UK & at the race circuits.

Bits are at the welders.

Which Commando production racer had the short stroke motor ?

None of them.

Why not stick to the subject under discussion.....

One of them , If ' Production ' and ' Racer ' are two seperate words .

Met another guy here with one who was haveing a fit , & recons Williams gave him a letter saying the short stroke was first made in 71 .
Maybe the First 80 mm Crank Was . :? :?:

Like the yellow plastic . Front Guard looks like what I regard as the English wet weather one , though one of the above photos SHOULD show it .

Cant see if your frame has a side stand lug , but if your black pipes are the in close real deal P.R. ones , youll need to loose it , as they fit in & close .

This is the earlyer one before they radiused it at the mount to stop the water removeing it .  :x  ( perhaps ) you can see its constant width .

Prefer this muffler set up , as historical cronology .

Think your 2 - 1 may be a ' works ' set up , as ive seen one refered to as thus , 75 ?
as in the " Racer Kits to buy " above .

Hi Matt

Love to think so but probably not.
Welder still has the parts. Been working on a set of forks. Still cant find a bottom yoke!!! Have a pair of alloy rim wheels to clean up. Also a 19" front if preferred.

Thanks Chris
