Just saw Peter Jackson's "They Shall Not Grow Old" documentary

WWI Buffs: Movie Rec....

All I can say is "Wow"!

All footage is from original National War archives. Beautifully restored/digitally enhanced to really bring it all to life. Voice overs from actual first persons recorded 50's-60's by BBC interviews.
My showing had an epilogue by Mr Jackson detailing how the movie was made. Things like how they used lip readers to recreate some of the voice overs in the footage. Even one case where they couldn't see the lips clearly to get a lip reading, yet were able to narrow down the command document the CO was reading to his troops by determine the regiment's identity and the date of the filming, then finding all known dispatches for them that day. They came up with a dispatch that when read aloud at various speeds, closely fit the facial movements of the CO.

Nothing out of Hollywood I have ever seen comes close to the reality this portrays.

Yes very well done, outstanding, and what they went through, my Grand father was a WW1 Anzac and sirvived to come home, he died 3 months before I was born in 1958 and still had the effects of Mustard gas in his system. Lest we forget.

Shown on UK national TV on 11/11/2018 to commemorate the centenary of the end of the Great War, made many shed a tear. Like Ash, my grandad suffered from the effects of mustard gas and died early in his 60s, thankfully I got to know him whilst still a youngster. My parents had older relatives who did not come back from France and Belgium who they did not get to know, so it was real for them and even more so when they had to go through it again ...
It is a great legacy from Peter Jackson bringing those voices and faces back to life.

I have a Great Uncle resting at Vimy Ridge .....

Hi, the film showed in the alternative cinema in Basel this afternoon, I remembered reading about it here and it was pouring down anyways so I went, was really a great experience. Thank you for the tip.

Have a great day,

Martin

I saw this film over the winter and was moved by the content and impressed with the production. I rarely go the movies but made an exception for this one and am glad I did.

Anyone know a source for a North American compatible DVD of it? Amazon seems to o only list the UK region specific DVD.

Download from Netflix (other sites are available) and burn to dvd - no regional issues

Hi trailer looks superb. Sadly it is not scheduled to launch in Switzerland, at least not this year.

Thank you anyhow,

Martin

There's a pretty impressive monument to some Canadian fallen in St. Julien, Belgium. I thought I would stop by and take a few pictures for our fellow Commonwealth members.
