There are some small imperfections (nicks) on the surface on the end of the camshaft where the points seal runs.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to do a repair to get a good surface back on the camshaft.

Normally I would try this with a seal, but if it doesn't work and leaks oil into the points housing it means I have to pull the engine out of the frame and split the crankcase to replace the camshaft.

Can a thin sleeve be fitted over this area to replenish the surface so the seal will have a good life.

Thanks

Don

Does anyone know the dimensions of the points/cam seal? I cannot find it anywhere.

Thanks

This my be kind of an old time "farmer fix" but I cleaned the cam end with MEK then built up the pitted area with JB Weld. Just to be sure I let the JB set for about a week then sanded it down with progressively finer grit sand paper. I think that I finished with 1000 grit. Worked well for the next 20,000 miles or so. At that point I did a complete engine rebuild and replaced the cam.

A quick update on my camshaft situation.

No-one apparently knows the dimensions of the contact breaker oil seal (03.4053).

I have fitted the stainless Speedi-Sleeve to the end of the camshaft and done a dummy assembly and the seal runs about ⅛" in from the inner end of the Speedi-sleeve. Which should work ok. I would have preferred the seal to be running a bit further towards the centre of the new speedi-sleeve, but because the speed-sleeve can only be pressed on the shaft so far and then the inner collar needs to be peeled away the remainder of the sleeve ends up not being pressed in as far as one would like. But as I said it should work ok.

I would like to obtain a seal with a double lip to run in the current position and the other lip further towards the centre of the stainless sleeve.

So if anyone knows the size of the seal required that would be a great help.

Any tips on removing the original contact breaker oil seal from the timing cover would be appreciated as well.

Thanks

Don

Assuming AN is showing the correct 03-4053/06-3609 seal in their photo then it's 0.625 x 0.938 x 0.187 (5/8 x 15/16 x 3/16) as marked on the seal.

Finding the seal dimension should only be a matter of measuring shaft x housing x width.

The camshaft is 0.625".
