I am buying red loctite tomorrow for a crank case job, bearing fit I already have and will give that a go also. Any other tips on thread lock there is a plethora of info on the tinternet ,but it is a bit dull only fit for PPPP.

Purple #222 is great for "just a little help" small screws, also things that need to come apart easily. Carb screws comes to mind, gently snug.

No it's 263 I'm after , oil tolerant etc ,there's nothing I like better than getting to grips with nuts and bolts with loctite. Well there is also using the gas spanner to get them off.

I have been involved in 1 or 2.

But seriously, you need at least to for the toolbox, red and blue. Then maybe something special for special applications, whatever that may be.

I use loctite 242 for external bolts outside of oil. 243 internal. Around the crankcase halves to cylinder base without the gasket 518, around a loose fit bearing 609.

My Input: Not interested. But thread locker in the true meaning is Norton's best friend.

Blue stuff or Red stuff? Only place I use Red is case studs otherwise nil use of any loctite on Cdo's anymore after quitting the torque wrench habit so snickering at this subject by applying appropriate variety of anti-seize per location. Dare ya to use any loctite on vibe prone Amal screws. Oh yeah use Red on the clutch nut. Dare ya to loctite the bar switch screws. Must be a MK3 issue.

That feeling, when you realize there are people who are simultaneously too young for the internet and too old at the same time.

A little bit of blue goes a long way, but I do try to avoid it and use UN thread nylocks or K-nuts instead (one of the saving graces of owning an 850). I avoid using red if I can help it. I use green occasionally, but usually when retrofitting bushings, etc...

I try to also avoid lockwire, mainly because it's a bear to do right. Most of the times I've seen it on vintage bikes, it's done wrong (not tensioned, not in the right direction, drilled wrong) and is not that much better than not doing it at all!

You are so so wrong and his name is spelt "hobot" ... I dont need to defend him but, i could smack you for being a wally and so ignorant..

Which thread locker?

The only place I use thread locker on my 850 is on the rear turn signals. They seem to want to come loose without it. Some parts are safety-wired, including: Clutch nut, oil drains/fittings, exhaust nuts but everything else seems to have no problems with loosening due to vibration. The one exception was the large carb idle setting knobs that were on the Amals when I got the bike - the ones with the knurled knobs you can easily reach in/turn by hand. They would turn over time due to vibration and change the idle setting. After a 200 mile ride the idle could be 2200 or 500 so I removed them and replaced them with the standard idle screws that need a screwdriver to adjust. They are unaffected by any vibration.

I read that you had an updated alton rotor (2014). What was the story if any about the upgrade?

Amazing! A thread that starts 'off topic' & then moves 'on topic'. This must be a first surely?
