What upgrade negates the use of the blue can?

The "blue can" is the capacitor. You don't need it at all unless you have no battery or want to try to start the bike without a battery. Do a search on 2MC. There is lots of reading on it. There is a thread somewhere about upgrading it to a capacitor that actually works as well.

You can get rid of the blue can capacitor anytime. Without it you will not be able to kick start the bike if the battery is dead or missing. It makes no difference if you are running a podtronics or original zeners or what type ignition you have. Jim

Your alternator and rotor need to be in good shape to use the cap. I used to run without a battery all the time, but when I put it back together in 2010, it would make spark, but no start. As soon as I hooked up the battery, it started. It will still run without the battery, but I'd probably need to get it on a good hill to build up the charge.

If it's still the original 2MC, it's most likely bad, so remove it or replace it, you can find lots of rather large capacitors like ludwig's cheap.
