I saw the old thread on here about properly changing oil in your commando, and a few people said what oils they use. I am restoring my dad's 1970 750 roadster and am trying to decide on what oil to use. I saw some links through andover and norvil that talk about what oils they recommend, but I would like to hear your personal experiences with certain brands. Anybody use that castrol moto line that they make?

I've never heard of it, and I can't find any information about "Castrol moto line" oil?

(as this is an OIL thread, if you get 10 replies then expect to get 10 different answers!)

And I use Silkolene Hardwick SAE50 monograde. (Now using 20W/50)

I make no comment because the area is a minefield but you asked a specific question.

I use Denicol 'Viscolube racing' SAE 40/50

A lot depends on where you're located. I do feel that it's a good idea to be able to obtain a consistent supply of your chosen product.

Many would say whatever you use, find an oil with a high zinc level. It's good for these old pushrod engines. Redline was mentioned and it has a high percentage of zinc. There are many others as well, I'm sure.

I use Valvoline VR-1 50W.

It has the high ZDDP (zinc) content the cams and lifters need, and is available at my local auto stores at a reasonable price.

The oil is available in several straight weights and 20W-50.

Brad Penn 20W50 4 stroke motorcycle oil. This is the old Kendall "green stuff" made in the original refinery in Bradford PA. (The Kendall name was sold off.)

Mostly depends on the climate. In Aus, most Norton owners I know use Penrite HPR50, which is a 40w/70 multigrade - Its hot over here ! I used to use 20w/60 in winter, but dont bother anymore. The heavier oil is fine all year round with a good warmup in winter.

I use a Castrol sraight 40 wt oil.
2 1/2 quarts ONLY I say ONLY so you don't have it blowin out of the breather and air element.
Do not go by the dip stick in the tank.
A dip.... designed it too short.
My riding season is May to Oct. poss November in Penna.
The bike is used in temps ranging from low 50's to mid 80's.
40 wt works well and I change it before every riding season.
This works for me :)

I use Millers pistoneeze straight 50 in the engine, and Redline shockproof in the gearbox. I have been considering going to a multigrade in the engine next year.

Hi,I do'nt think it matters which oil you use(provided it's suitable for the Commando) the key is to change it regularly i.e at least once every year..............Cheers Andy

that is the castrol specific moto oil they are making.

I think what you mean is either the "Power 1" or "Act>evo" oil?: http://castrolmoto.com/en/our_oils/bike_oils.php

I wouldn't personally recommend using any 10W-30 or 10W-40 oil (-unless you intend to ride when the ambient temperature is at, or below freezing point?) As those 10W- grade oils are really more suitable for use in modern engines.

So the Castrol Act>evo 4T 20W-50 would probably be more suitable for a Commando engine.

Hi there, can't find that thread (may be it was in the "other" forum") where there were a very interesting site comparing a lot of oils for our bikes???

Hello Ludwig, that's the one (Amsoil), many thanks, though , most of them are not available here (or at least in France, except mobil vtwin, may be......).

I use at the moment FUCHs 20W-50 CI, C being abbreviation for compression igniton (diesels).Diesel oil is normally high in zinc content which helps lubricate cams etc and also cotes internals which helps stop corosion or rust in moist environments. Its also low ash, which means when it burns theres lower residue to filter out or send the oil black. I run it in my high HP turboed trucks, tractors, 4wd and stationary engines, farm bike (650 Honda) etc in a extremely hot enviroment. Havent run it in a Norton yet as its getting slowly rebuilt. I use it in my ,37 600 Sloper Panther and 42 Harley with no problems at all. Regards Foxy
