Widths? and finishes?, stainless steel, chromed steel, chromed stainless?

then the fender stays have to be addressed, and the fender braces too.

I can get it started, but off the top of my head I don’t have the fender widths. Along with different fenders they had their own specific stays.
’68 to ‘70 were the narrowest ones. ‘71-‘72 were a bit wider. Up to this point they were chrome plated. ‘73 to ‘74 including 750 and 850 were a bit wider yet and stainless. ‘75 as always was a one off year, but also stainless, had only the rear stay.
4.10-19 tires did not really fit inside the earlier fenders.

Are there width differences between 1971-72 (06.2172) and 1973-75 (06.3188) rear fenders? The section type looks very similar. Not really a D-section, are they? More like a C-section, but I am looking at the images of repro fenders by AN now. Genuine rear fenders appear to have a true D-section, at least from 1973 on.

Don’t go by AN , their ‘71-72 rear is wrong. They simply took the D section ‘73-74 stainless fender and drilled it for the earlier tail light. The ‘71-72 rear is more rounded and should be chromed steel. The D shaped fender does not fit the profile of the early taillight properly. I have a brand new AN ‘71-72 unit in the sales section if you’re interested, I’ll make you a deal😀.

Here is an image of a genuine rear fender 06.3188 as seen on Ebay. It definitely has a D-section. AN's repro mudguard may not be entirely correct.

Another image of a genuine rear fender 06.2172 as seen on Ebay (chrome is tarnished, "patina" as some sellers call it!). Section is clearly C-shaped.

On my Mark IIA that was manufactured on June 1974, the front fender is made of polished stainless steel, 4 7/8 inches wide. There's a rolled lip on both front and rear edges of the fender. The fender stays are attached using posidriv headed machine screws. The fender stays and bridge are painted in a light grey, low gloss finish. The bridge is attached to the fender using soft aluminum solid rivets.

Yes. Good description.

I had to replace the front guard of my August 74 Mk 11 due to someone backing into it. And the replacement was missing the rolled lip on the rear present on the original.

'69--70 'S' and Roadster have chrome rear 'D' profile with an indent for a tire pump. '71 and '72 same but with no indent.
Some late '72 (MKIV 750) had stainless fenders as the '73-'74 models.

Never seen an original Commando with a rolled lip on the rear of the front fender. I have a '73 and a '69 both purchased new with no lip

Definitely rolled on the rear lip on a 1974 build 850. Owned the bike since 1978 and owned by a friend before that.

Original until some guy backed his Jag into it. 😢

Peter's description of a 74 build front guard is very accurate in my experience.

My Feb '69 Fastback has a narrow front guard 4 3/8 wide with a rolled front lip no rolled rear lip and steel with a narrow stay complete with a cable guide [ I also have 2 spares the same] my Mk3 850 has a stainless front again with a front rolled lip no bottom lip 4 3/4 wide. As has previously been reported the 68-70 R, S, and Roadster had a rear steel guard with an indentation for a tyre pump which clipped to the frame, I believe the '71 and early '72 were steel and later on a change to stainless.

There you go. Photos of an original August 1974 front guard. Rolled at front and back.

Unfortunately the modern replacement sold by Andover does not have this original feature. Possibly so the rear rubber flap option can fit ??
