Gents,

In a moment of eBay exuberance, I recently purchased a sexy looking VR 880 gearbox shell, these appear much strengthened over the original design, so I thought it’d be nice on the 920 along with the Maney outrigger (TTI box is just too rich for me).

I haven’t got it yet as it’s got to come across the pond, but I’m wondering if this is as simple as I first thought? Is it a direct swap for a standard shell and internals?

Ken, I’m guessing you may have info on this perhaps?

Cheapskate :)
Remember - a) it's Christmas, b) it's only money.......

Steve, can I get you to talk to my Missus?

Don’t think she’ll listen though. I’ve over used your suggested excuses already. By quite a margin!

Yes, direct swap, no difference mechanically.

The only thing you SHOULD find, is a little notch near the top mount, to clear the Tim Reid Spyke starter nose hardware. (could be the empty cases were milled by Tim when he did the fit-ups, and that one never crossed his shop.

I just sent mine away along with the entire 880 engine and big-bearing cradle & FCR carbs that Kenny sold me 10 years ago.

Lucky you! Are there more out there. I also want to have one under my christmas tree!

The ones I bought from Kenny had one other difference. The size of the dowel pins locating the inner cover was larger than the stock pins. I found it pretty simple to just drill the holes in the cover to match. Other than that, I don't know of any problems with using them.

I don’t know, I have emailed the seller I bought mine from to ask if he has more. He’s also listing some VR880 barrels, but I think our own Ken could sell you some of those if you wanted some !

I wudda, but I went the Maney 920 route instead.

I think that's Kenny Dreer. (he moved from Oregon to Florida last year)

He told me last week he still had some stuff he was selling off including a nice front end and a pair of real nice matching 17" wheels. He also has a custom bearing spacer for me to send the guy that bought my 880 engine.

He had set aside stuff to build himself a nice 880 for his retirement, then decided he'd just sell everything off. I think he has a Harley now.
