You will probably get the best information here?

Too early for "VIN" but does your ('71?) model have a riveted-on plate on the frame steering head, as that should give the frame number and (month/year) date of manufacture?

The number on the plate should also match the engine number, which is to be found on the left-hand crank case immediately below the barrel base joint? There should also be a matching number on the top gearbox lug.

You posted a reply about doing that at "A Miracle - no more engine oil leaks!!! (Mark III)".

VIN LOL #

Thanks pal, thought you would know, this forum I think is the ...bible of Norton knowhow, tks for putting me right on were my post went, The # match is good, not that it bothers me, frame, 140449, engine looks like 20M35/140449, little bit hard to read, must have been on the pee the night before, stamped on the curve!!!!!! and some are double stamped I know, I know, toolmakers are to fussy

Ok, nothing out of the ordinary there, although "20M35" is probably 20M3S ?

And the number dates it to around the late 1970 production period.

I am a new member and have an engine with the prefix of 20m35 not 20m3s. I have no frame or paperwork to go with this engine I believe it is a 71 because the number after starts 15XXX? I was hoping to use it for parts or a second engine for my other 71 commando custom . I have had motorcycles since I was 14, Dommi's and es2 now commando and I am building a rigid mounted and doing away with the isolastics. I hear you ask why? I do like a challenge. Any reason the factory would stamp the engine 20m35? All help appreciated. Thanks

I'd guess the person who did the stamping picked up the wrong stamp.
