Does anyone know the purpose of the flat circlip which is on the adjuster side of the 'vernier' isolastic? These isolastics have been retrofitted to my Mk 1 Commando by a previous owner who has incidentally put the circlip on the wrong side i.e. the fixed side of both the front and rear isolastics. Should I endeavor to prise them off and put them on the correct side or doesn't it matter?

What do you mean by circlip???? Describe it please for us? Does it surround the setscrew???
If you are referring to the flat clip that surrounds the rubber gaiters then it should be movable to get to the setscrew for a vernier isolastic set up.

P.S. Welding torches do not apply. I could say alot more here but why?

I don't remember any circlips in the RGM vernier isolastic kits (not that is much help)

Norvil or Andover Norton perhaps ?

Had one on my Mk3............... more like a "bicycle clip" You all probably still got some.. For putting around your trouser leg to stop your longin getting caught in the pushbike chain. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D But smaller for isolastics

The bicycle clip is a good description, it can be seen as no. 21 in the parts diagram from www.oldbritts.com in group 15 , the part no. is 06-4723 and it is described as 'clip, Mk 111 isolastic gaiter' it is a close fit around the adjusting collar and does not appear to have any function apart from covering the adjusting holes but as I previously stated mine has been put on the other side.

Its to stop dirt filling the holes is my guess, the gaiters are more to keep the water in than out ;)

TECHNICAL DATA,
Section A
"ISOLASTIC MOUNTINGS ADJUSTMENT METHOD

2. Slide the clip away from the 8 holes in the adjuster (chaincase side on rear, timing side on the front).

Section F13,
4. Following the procedure defined in Technical Data: Slack[en] of[f] the main mounting central bolt, and slide spring clips clear of holes in adjuster.

There is only one adjuster side with multiple holes, the other side is a once one fit and hold in place with a single grub screw, well that's how mine was set up.

It holds the rubber gaiter in place as its name suggests.

so why isn't there a clip on both sides?

The outer end of the Iso. gaiter on the "fixed" side is located by a slot in the abutment-so there's no need for a clip on that side.
