I do not post here very often, but have been a member for many years. I have owned my Commando for over 40 years, have rebuilt the bike a couple of times and I thought I knew commandos fairly well, but since joining I have learnt a lot by reading some of the great posts on this forum.
Over the years there have been some that have posted rubbish, or done their best to upset other members. Who can forget Carbonfibre or more recently Phil Yates. Recently Jerry created the Pub section for rubbish posts, or posts not specifically related to our Norton. If the individuals that continually hijacked threads posted in the pub section no one would complain.
With regard to the “Under engine balance pipe” thread we have seen what may be a great thread hijacked again. We had someone there that started a thread that could have gone somewhere. Unfortunately the original poster has deleted his posts. The hijacker has imparted his great knowledge that “a balance pipe coming off at right angles to a header pipe is bullshit”. If he had read prior posts and threads concerning the cross pipe he might have learnt something. And of course he has asserted that Ludwig has never contributed anything constructive.
Ludwig has never posted other than helpful information. Thanks to Ludwig the air trap at the front of my Commando head has been rectified. Worth an oil cooler as Ludwig put it. A couple of months ago I replaced my valve guide oil seals without removing the head. It went very well by following the instructions posted by Ludwig. I look forward to every Ludwig post. After 40 years of Norton ownership I am still open to learn from knowledgeable people.
Aco has posted more often than most. I have learnt that Aco used to race a Triumph (I think that is mentioned in every second post of his) but he now has a Norton. Aco’s Norton did not have enough torque so he advanced a combat cam by 15 degrees, (no not a couple of degrees but 15 degrees), which greatly increased his torque. But then he fitted a 6 speed box because his power band was still so narrow, and then on the track he never revs the bike beyond 6500. The only time I ever saw Aco ask advice was with regard to a dyno. He got some very good advice on how to tune his bike on the dyno. I wonder if he ever tried his bike on the dyno after advancing that cam. And more recently I found out that Aco decreases the trail of his front end by decreasing the offset of the triple trees, which of course is exactly the opposite to every other Norton, or any bike for that matter. rake-and-trail-specs-t12097-60.html?hilit=trail
If Aco were to post exclusively in the Pub then we would not have as much reason to complain. Otherwise I can see him following Carbonfibre and Phil. Can’t happen soon enough as far as I am concerned.
A wise man once said it is better to say nothing and have people think that you might be a fool than to open your mouth and confirm it.
Had my bitch for the day, sorry folks
