UK Tax Discs To Be Axed

I've carried mine around in my pocket for the last 15 years. Always thought it spoiled the bikes looks 8). Can't remember the last time traffic plod asked to see it.

I think a little bit of the nostalgia will be lost for the future generation of owners (if that makes sense :? ) I have wads of old tax discs for the Norton and my Triumph, it adds a bit to the history of the bike, same as the old style MOT test sheet which is now electronic :(

They have announced plans to do the same here.

Apparently, the pleece can sit by the side of the road and scan numberplates, at something like 3000 (?) per hour.
And instantly flag vehicles that are not registered, or taxed, or insured, or the driver has no licence or is disqualified.
Assuming the owner is the driver, we'd assume.

And also assuming the computer is all up to date and correct details on file....

Yeah, I know what you mean......I keep all my petrol receipts and have them chronologically mounted on a display board. In the past I've given presentations to friends and family who called around, purely based on the petrol receipts date, volume of fuel, prices, location, vat number etc. The winter evenings would simply fly by.....but don't seem to get many visitors now :( . I blame the internet :?.

Changes to SORN and road tax application rules coming into force on 16 December 2013:

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... Issue6.pdf

1. No requirement to renew a Statutory Off Road
Notification (SORN) on an annual basis
Subject to law change, from 16 December 2013 DVLA will remove
the requirement for customers to renew a SORN on an annual basis.
This means that a SORN will remain in force until a vehicle is either
taxed, sold or scrapped. Once a vehicle keeper has notified DVLA
that their vehicle is SORN’d, they will no longer have the burden of
annual SORN renewals.

2. Evidence of insurance no longer required when
taxing a vehicle
Subject to law change, from 16 December 2013 motor
insurance policies will no longer be checked at the point when
a vehicle is taxed. This change simplifies the taxing process for
millions of motorists. Motorists will not need to provide motor
insurance policy evidence when they:

tax online or by phone

register and tax through a motor dealer

tax at a Post Office® branch

register and tax through the post to DVLA.
Motorists will still need to ensure they have a valid insurance
policy, but this will not be checked when a vehicle is taxed.
This change will not apply to motorists in Northern Ireland.
They will still need to produce evidence of a valid insurance
policy when a vehicle is taxed.
DVLA’s ‘continuous insurance enforcement’ scheme ensures
vehicles are insured
.

I think you forgot a few of these   :D in your post Al lotment

A classic bike like most of us on here have got, surely needs some sort of provenance to prove it is a 'classic' and also it's history. Old tax discs and MOT certs are just a couple of ways to do this.

You're right about the lack of :D :D :D, I was only teasing. Proving it's history? Well you've got the reg. plate and log book. Don't see the importance of tax discs and mot's. If the speedo's original that will tell quite a bit.
