UK Guys/Gals - need a "lunch" ride location from Bath.

In other areas where we ride (Mexico and Texas) we have a couple of "default" places that we like to ride to for lunch when we just want to take a ride without much planning. We ride out around 10am, get back around 4PM. In Mexico/Texas our destination is about 2 hours away, not counting any stop for fuel/whatever.

Being new to having bikes here in Bath (bought them last week), we're looking for something similar. It doesn't have to be a motorcycle-oriented establishment, just a decent place to eat via a (mostly) twisty/interesting road.

A couple of days ago we rode to Avebury mostly via the B roads which we enjoyed. We had never been to Avebury so we stopped at the first pub we saw, the Red Lion, which is right across the street from the Avebury stone circles. No surprise, it was VERY CROWDED. It took almost 20 minutes of queuing at the bar to get a couple of beers. Food took another 45 minutes. Too be fair, the food was quite good but for our "default" location we'd prefer a spot that is not a big tourist attraction!

Any thoughts?

Can't help in that area Mike but if you make it up to Notts/Derbyshire let me know.

It is summer and the worst time to go out for a ride for all the usual reasons.
Avebury is a most interesting site for sure though.

This is a nice pub with lots of good roads in the area. Went there once and there were a group of Broughs in the car park.
Further afield Devon is good for biking, lots of good roads around Dartmoor.
Enjoy.

For lunch, a farm owned restaurant in Glastonbury, Abbey Tea Rooms, does a nice wholesome meal.

If you want to make a day of it, ride down to New Milton, visit the Sammy Miller museum, lunch at the Willow Barn and then back home. Maybe too far and too much for a lunch ride though.

Hi Mike

You could take a look at Tintern Abbey, nr Chepstow its very pretty down through the Wye Valley head up to Gloucester or pay to cross the bridge St Briavels used to be a good place to eat.

Hi Mike
The Newt Cafe at Gillingham Dorset attached to Moto Corsa (shiny expensive bikes to look at and a good meal) or a little bit further just south of Shaftsbury up Zig Zag hill, Compton Abbas airfield cafe offers a good meal with light aircraft comings and goings to add interest. Google either for details. Enjoy the ride.

Great suggestions, guys! We're going to try all of them over the next month. We're going to the IOM this Friday for a week at the Manx GP (where I'll be a track marshall for one of the races at sector 11, which includes Creg Ny Baa). When we get back we'll start the "tour" of pubs.

You need to include the Jurby Sunday in your week at the IOM. A must see event, there are others but as you get there on Friday you are just in time.

Used to live in Wiltshire near Somerset, agree with all those suggestions especially zigzag hill (and then follow the B3081, named as twistiest road in UK, into New Forest NB and Sammy Miller museum) and Moto Corsa (just for a gawp). If you get into the Wye Valley (and you definitely should), the Steel Horse cafe near Abergavenny is a nice stop for snack/coffee surrounded by nice roads.
