Still doing alot of reading on the 850 I just bought before I grab a wrench.

The previous owner (deceased) put a shut off valve on the outlet side of the oil tank that feeds the engine. Any idea why ?

Will either a Yuasa 12n9-4b-1 battery or 12n14.3a work ok with a boyer ignition ? I know the 12n14 is about a inch taller.

The shut off valve is there to prevent wet sumping, that is to stop all the oil in the oil tank leaking into the sump. In my opinion a very bad idea, just forget to open it once and you'll wreck the motor.

I haven't a clue to what size those batteries are but a long as they'll give you 12vdc long enough to start the bike and back up the alternator at low revs they'll be fine.

The YB14-A2 is the right configuration.
I have a valve on the oil feed line. When it is off, the red handle sticks in the way of the kickstart. Many people have employed safe guards to prevent accidental oil starvation, limit switches and the like. There are inline check valve available but they have failed (stuck). Take heed with this valve. One slip and that all she wrote. Oh, you can rebuild and refurbish the oil pump, leave the the bike in the compression stroke method, (one of the cylinders will be in exhaust stroke anyhow), and a hole bunch of other stuff but wetsumping from the tank is a way of life that we must learn to deal with on the bikes terms. I applied a MKIII timing cover this winter. We'll see how that goes.
Rule of thumb is to check the oil in the tank. If low, drain the sump and pour back into the tank. If you ride every day leave the valve open. If storing for a while, close and flag the valve in some manner.
