TT pipes

Lots of responses and as usual I can't reach a conclusion. Perhaps TT pipes of a smaller diameter so as not to lose low speed power? I sent an email to Viking but probably won't hear from them for a few days. I would like to avoid trying to cut and weld a set of pipes as my welding is not so beautiful but it may be the only way. How critical is it to have both pipes the same length?

By the way, does anyone have an old MAC 2-1 set up for a Commando? Perhaps I can alter that and make it fit minus the muffler.

Some V-8 toikies put them missmatched to ' broaden the tourque ' as each cylinder would have a differant power band ! Er ! . like on Big Blocks .

HOWEVER !

The Clymer manuel has notes from the Factory Rawlins Commando soup up bullitens . Which transgressed then current noise emmision levels .

HENCE NO ' COMBAT " 850's .

The 1 7/8 " o.d. headers shown seem like a good idea to me , one high Ea Side . Commando SS style .
I did try the Mega , on a 2-1 chopped from stock headers with secondary ( under ) pipe twice the header X-section . Didnt Hurt .

Heres a reasonable picture of side pipes , low . matched length . a good deal of time should be spent ascertaining fit for Max Lean .

Then theres the Dual under pipes , for MAX LEAN , which I figure youre refering to . ?

Crikey , howd that happen . Not to Worry . NEVERTHELESS ! . More :

Wonder if theres one for ' Race pipes ' ?

Hate tight bends . Nuther illustration of Comp. set up . ( If ya gunna do it , ya gotta do it RIGHT .

Tho theres many variations on pipe runs . You can get one pipe high up under the timing cover on the right .0.-

Now if you want to do this , it'd pay to get em matched length !

Used the Shenton Triumph 1 3/4 pipe tuned length , 31 from valve face o.a. ( I think ? )
on 61 T120R , gained 1.000 rpm +
70s V-4 Fords ( 96 x 66 ) odd fire ( 180 / 540 ) gained a lotta go - Dual 2 in system .
Ford 2L ohc . gained 1500 rpm . sequential into straight 2 1/4 .

This I thought Id check the VOLUME as the lengths with all the curves arnt exact to measure.
Was within 1/4 all. A plastic beer jug was handy . Filled to ' the line ' , Fitted EXACT so was
used to trim all to match . The thing'd then rev to 7500 in first & 2nd , locktited Big End Nuts
& V-6 carb . Otherwise stock . Fresh .

Night Classes !? bound to be a handy welder there . MAYBE . Done from pipe bends & tube ,
the main things to get good blends & matches , so no internal lips or section impediment .

So around 12 / 15 hours work . Or 4 days on a 4 Cyl. system . OPTIMISED for get up & GO .

OR , make a set FROM JUNK in the scrap bin at the local exhaust shop ( ask foist & they mayave offcuts indoors forfree . )
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
THEN take you artistic scrap wonder along to a A1 top notch MANDREL BENDER Pipe Shop for a marvelous replica .

That fits. Hopefully . As in DO A REAL GOOD FITTING rough joins etc set . A few simple fixtures GET A EXACT COPY of the runs , with nice flowing curves .
Taped on / Painted / Marked = ALL the INSIDE / CLOSE crucial fits / lengths adjacent , plus photos of the custom junk in situ . Should Get Great ' to fit ' copies from a decent tube bender .
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

( Bigger Diameter pipes not requiring the custom top flange seperates a consideration . But ' Tooled Up ' shops should be ' Low Hours ' charge , if youve done the donkey work . )
Some stupid counts wanted to charge 500 pounds for 10 minutes computer time , doing a hot Two Cyl cam from a six . A hacksaw is cheaper & youd have 480 pounds left over ! .

Had a artical on the Kiwi ( pom ? ) in HUNTLY I think , NEWZEALAND that does replicer & Vintage Custom systems . Or Pipes anyway .
As he has debri ( frames engines etc ) , they can be built to suit & fit . Search back issues on line or Email em ?

Kiwi dollar low so good value for U S dollar .

About the most artistic , big open flowing bends .

Though trad. pommy cafe pipe on Rt. with another like a Tri dual high right LEFT pipe ,d get hign'n'low R. H. , . I think maybe thatll do , for now .

TT pipes

most OF THESE DONT TUCK IN TIGHT REARWARD , where is the most crucial lean clearance . If ya duna want to lift the rear or the deck .
TT pipes

ANYWAY , one Rt. or Left , swept back . The Other from opposite , so as both outlets are the same side . One High one Low .

Whatever Next . ;)

Fantastic photos

Keep in mind the commando motor slants forward vs an upright stance Atlas, dommy etc..

Ben at Rayson's might have some samples to copy from. He's a third generation exhaust bender, and his family were former owners of Unity Equipe, the Manx Norton name, John Tickle, etc, etc...

Not cheap, but nothing is these days.

The exhaust design looks like CR Axtell's one that I think is in the back of the Clymer manual.

This is the Mega I ran on the 2 into 1 . Believe the Clymer Commando manual gave 1 7/8 in. for pipe diameter, but no length ? .
Theres replicer Dunstall Mufflers around , Plus Wassel Megas , & Replicer Tri. Thruxton mufflers . Straight thru glass pac .

TT pipes

Well , somebody did say something about ' T T ' pipes ,
He being American i dont think the I.o.M. is the referance .

I made the BUB 2-1 pipe into a TT setup at one time. Was a crap effort cuz I never learned how to weld, and it was all too short, so took the easy route and I went back to the 2 into 1 setup.

My old turd has screw in spigots for 1 1/2 inch exhaust headers. I use the old Triumph style clamps to hold the headers on the head. I may have tried Triumph headers back in the olden days, but I don't think they worked. Can't actually remember. If you want the right TT look they have to be fabricated by somebody that knows what they are doing. I can't help with that. I have not had any luck getting a response from anyone regarding building a set of tracker pipes in the US or abroad. Obviously, I don't know the secret handshake.
