Sadly, I’ve been a little bit poorly very recently, aka I’ve had a heart attack. I went in by ambulance all guns blazing and was operated on within 10 minutes. Obviously what they did to me worked a bit of magic, although I now need to take it easy for a while and they will have me back in and do a triple-bypass to sort things out later on.

I’d been slowing down of late, now I know why, and sold my ZZR1400 and Hayabusa as they were getting too much for me. As the garage was a little bare with only the Commando I felt I just had to get something I’d wanted when I was a lad. This was available at a sensible price from a dealer friend, never registered here, and a Spanish import but it’s been in a showroom collection for 28 years I believe. 1976 model and 1160 miles only. Now for some time to give it a good deep clean. Do they wet sump?

It was a bit tongue in cheek really, they all do that guv. I’ll keep an eye on it. Is there a sensible drain to use, like the one I’ve got in the Commando?

Yes, there is...
...personally, I wouldn't use one, at least not without an oil pressure gauge although an oil pressure gauge is a good thing to have on a triple in my opinion.

The seat of the original anti-drain ball valve can be recut which can improve it.

Mine can sit for 2-3 months without any sign of wet sumping
Nice looking bike you have there by the way
I wouldn't go moving it around too much at the moment while you are supposed to b taking things easy
I have mikunis and pea shooter's on mine ,the sound track is amazing

1976 model

Can you give the date code?
Although the model year letter changed during October '75 (from K to N) and there were a few changes made throughout T160 production there's no actual 1976 model T160 as such.

Yes I agree there ,an oil pressure gauge is worth its weight

If it has wet sumped from standing then an easy (easier than removing parts of the exhaust system to get at the sump plate) way is to put the bike on the side stand and remove the drain plug from the primary case as the oil floods the primary once it reaches a certain level in the crankcase. Although it won't be the full contents it should be around 2-3 litres.

350cc can be returned to the primary and the remainder to the oil tank.
Also, a sump plate with a drain plug is available.
If the sump plate is removed take care to refit it correctly as it is possible to fit it backwards so blocking off the scavenge pickup.

They sure are pretty :)

Mind you, not being picky, just inquisitive: The RH switchgear looks of a different era to the LH (which looks familiar(ish) to a Mk3 Commando owner)??

Lovely looking bike, do yourself a favour and get one of LPW's lifting handles, they fit on the drive side shock mount and make lifting the leviathan up onto the main stand a tad easier.

Glad to hear you got sorted in time… just in time by the sound of it…!

Fabulous looking bike you’ve got there. Looks bloody clean already to me, so I can’t wait to see the pics after the deep clean !

Hi Les. It‘s EK , May 75. Why did I type 76? I’ll blame my meds ;)

Yes it looks mismatched, but according to the parts manual they’re both correct. I guess typical of the time, fit what they could. The rh cluster is the same as on my mk2a a 169SA unit.

I’ve also been to the doc today just to get some better idea of all the meds I’m on, and he’s told me to stay calm they’ve only done part of the job, just enough to keep me alive and to wait until they do a triple-bypass (I thought it was a double) in a few months.

So sorry to rub it in to the guys over the water, but nothing has been a cost of any sort to me apart from time and energy. There are times when our NHS really does a wonderful job. I will want to short cut the surgery by going private, saving perhaps 6 months before going under the knife, but that’ll cost me around £25k all in.

Have you never paid national insurance?

Absolutely, but there is the typical NHS waiting list that is currently around 9 months. I’d much rather take 6 months off that time and get fitter faster, I can’t waste too much of what little time I’ve got left allocated to me.
