OK people, as some of you may know I am (very slowly) building a Triton.

Tonight I'm thinking about exhaust systems, I was thinking about going for the traditional swept back Goldstar style pipes like these (but with Goldstar style silencers (mufflers))

However, these present several disadvantages, first of all they are chrome and I'm lazy, I hate polishing chrome! Secondly they have to be removed if you want to access the primary or the timing cases and in some cases to access the points cavity.

So I was thinking about something like this from Norton guru Steve Maney, it is a race system for a Norton but I'm sure something similar is available for a Triumph, if not this system could be adapted. He also sells an optional silencer kit which would keep the noise down if required.

These photos came from the NYC Norton website and it's got some great articles. Have a look here http://www.shelbynyc.com/nycnorton/Racer2004.htm

Your thoughts and opinions please, remember it's a Triton so there's no right, wrong or stupid replies (Except telling me to put a Norton lump in it! :D )

Thanks

Actually high pipes, one on each side would be very cool.

I can't remember if you are going unit or pre-unit.

I do not like the sweptback pipes becasue they interfere with service.

Those high level ones will block access to the magneto, float bowls and gearbox adjuster. Possibly clutch cable and gearbox filler too, depending what sort of bits you're using.

Think about making the pipes easy to remove and replace, if you go for swept-back or high level. My stainless swept-back pipes are welded to Goldie silencers and attached by only the head stub clamps and two nuts on rubber bobbins at each silencer bracket.

How about this?

Seen at the Waterfall Cafe, Glen Maye, Isle of Man some years ago.

The cut off seat is not my style but the zorsts were nicely executed and suit the bike very well. An eye-catcher.

I like the pipes, and they're certainly different but the routing would not work unless I want to throw away my oil tank!

I like your thinking Triton Thrasher! My plan 'A' was rubber bobbins :)
I won't have any mag or gearbox adjuster problems as my motor's a 69 unit. I know it's not historically correct but it keeps the costs down as it shares 90% of it's parts with my 71 Bonnie. Still leaves the problem of the L/H carb though?

Thanks

Hi Dave,
Thanks for taking the time of posting the pics.
I'm going unit and I guess it's normal that you can't remember because I've been too lazy to post any progress here! Shame on me, I'll get round to it one day!
To be honest, I don't think those pipes would look right on a Triton, they're a little too "desert racer" for my tastes.

Those pipes could be cut off at any length and any mufflers fitted to look like any other high pipe bike you like even the norton SS

That's good thinking bb220 :) I'd give it a go especially if I could find a grotty second hand set to de-chrome and paint!

Thanks

I was thinking some custom ones somewhere in between the Norton SS and the Triumph...

It's an idea, I guess it's time to search the web for a couple of hours :)

Thanks

Webby,

Happy to help with thoughts on exhaust. nycnorton AT gmail DOT com

Thanks Kenny,
I'll be touch once I've given the subject a little more thought.

I hope you didn't mind me copying a couple of the photos off your web site (Think of it as free advertising :))
BTW, Great site with lots of interesting info!

Hi TT,
I can't say I ever liked the Thruxton pipes, they always looked too long for my likings. I like my pipes to end at or before the end of the bike. Mind you, they solve the service problems of the other styles of pipes, with these you can get to the cases and the carbs. Maybe that's why they were designed like that? That's a great front drum in the photo, shame they're out of my price range!

All the best

PS: Haven't I seen you on the classic bike forum?

Ha you'd see me there more, if there were more Classic Bikes talked about.

What I really don't like about the Thruxton exhaust is that hanger at the end of the silencer- looks like an MZ patent! The pipes may have been designed to fit behind a full fairing.

I agree with you, I'm not there very often, I've no desire to talk about jap classics, strange for a UK based forum there is a huge lack of Brit bikes.
I forgot all about the exhaust hangars, but now you mention it I remember, definitely looks like an after thought or typical bodge. You could be right about the design, I know the sweptbacks were designed to clear a fairing. I won't be fitting one, I don't like plastic on my bikes (or in my women for that matter :D )

Looks neat and tidy, and has a classic look to it.

If you have access to a welder and pipe bender, you could do a mock-up, using lengths of pipe tack-welded together. You could then give the mock-up to a custom fabrication shop.

Hi Dave,

I like that, it looks a little like the new Commando system. Not only doe's it look good, it solves all the problems of the other two systems. I don't have a welder or a pipe bender at home but I have access to them at work. I guess I could mock the whole lot up using plastic plumbing tube and then fab it up at work.

The best alternative so far! :D

Thanks
