Please guys I keep being asked for Norton triplex primary chains.

I will happily supply them but they are of budget quality, as all triplex seem to be
these days, and basically not very good.

Laverdas have in the main changed to a "big pin" Merc deisel cam chain and for around 12 years
they have run faultlessly.

The price is the same and you get a better product........your choice.

Without wishing to sound too thick, would this chain run on the original, preferably new sprockets, or are new diameter toothed sprockets required?
Signed,
The village yokel.

Runs on the old sprockets, I have a Unit T120 primary chain from Andy and it oozes quality compared to the old one.

Is there an American-based distributor or must chain orders be individually shipped?

I'd like to try a duplex primary for a Commando.

Is there a way to evaluate the condition of the triplex chain before its causing extra wear on sprocket teeth or breaking up itself? Especially if still installed?

+1 on Steve's question, and also the one about "howduyugetwon"?

You should always check your primary chain when you do a service, not hard to pull the primary case off and make a inspection as well you have to check for to much play and adjust when needed, I do this when its maintenance time and I have always got long life out of my triplex chains, its the same with your rear chain alway inspect it on regular maintenance and clean, lub and ajust when needed.

I have always got long life out of my chains because I take the time to inspect, clean, lub and ajustments when needed, its all part of nomal maintenance on our bikes.

I think the catch today is,the Renold primary chain you have had for a long time is not of the same quality as that sold today.
I finally got a IWIS drive chain through NorComCycles. :)

i have three of Andy's duplex chains in my Laverdas and one in my 750 commando (the other 850 commando has a belt, which in retro spec i wish i saved the extra $$ and got andy's chain too)

no problem what so ever and they are quality stuff - my laverda's typically hit 8-9K rpms and i've got almost 9,000 miles on my laverda 1200 with one of Andy's duplex - still looks good - (and the bike is a beast pushing close to 90 hp)

as a matter of course when ever i get a new bike, or one where the history is questionable/unknown i automatically replace the primary chain - only time i hadn't done it was in a triumph trident that broke the chain and punched a big hole in the primary case and damaged the case - for the $ it's good insurance

i like them so much i've replaced the cam chains in my laverda w/ Andy's stuff too

Yes I understand that parts today aren't what they use to be like, I have just replaced my triplex chain about 8 months ago and have done about 5,000 miles on it, I have just pulled my primary cases off to replace the sliding seal and the triplex chain is still like new and was well lubed and running the early Ford trannie oil in it I was surprised that my clutch plates were still reasonly dry.

This is good to hear since I have been contemplating the switch to a belt drive. However, life has me spending my money elsewhere , leaving little leftover for my bike. Sooo, I now have a 3rd new option which seems great for my situation. thanks for posting that info mikegray660 :D

Andy - am I correct in my assumption that your duplex chains are not x- ring and so will need to run in oil like the triplex?

You will have to run in oil.

There are small chain made in O ring but only 219 and none in duplex or triplex.

One comment on here was correct in as much as modern triplex chains are not
to the same quality as the old "made in UK" Renold. The duplex I sell is a bit
special and also as stated has been run on Laverdas for over 10 years now with
good results. It is lighter and I am told quieter than triplex but above all is
bullet proof. It is from a Merc diesel engine and the ref is iwis D67HP. It is
however a bugger to cut and adapt to length and iwis will only sell in engine
lengths ( from a Merc dealer bloody expensive). I can cut and shut and have been
doing so for 40 years.

More and more Norton guys are using it now and the iwis heavy duty cam chains,
Alton starter chains and rear chains have been well received.

I will ship to traders worldwide and have interest from USA and Australia where I
have sold chains to dealers.

Thre are many issues and as I have done, I will gladly attend any club night to
go through them, and chain in general. Unforunately where my talks would be
most useful, USA and Australia the travel costs would blow it out of the water,
and my suggestion that the many clubs in those countries get together and
get me over for a week talking to all of them has met with silence.

Hello all,

I brought an iwis duplex primary drive chain, and an iwis final drive chain, from Andy the other day, not had chance to fit yet, but they look to be very nice chains, and it was a pleasure to deal with Andy, very nice and knowledgeable chap, he will most certainly have my custom in future.

The cost of the two chains, with a spare link that Andy kindly popped into the post after the main delivery, was very reasonable, considering the quality, very reasonable indeed, I am looking forward to running the duplex chain, as it happens I am lucky enough to have an iwis triplex chain which is in good order, so that will be carefully greased and wrapped up, Andy actually tried to persuade me to keep the triplex on, and save money!, I just wanted to try the duplex!.

Its not so often you can get to deal with good old fashioned manners, knowledge and honesty, I think Andy fits the bill on all three, thank you Andy!, I will post a photo when I get the primary back together,

John
