Is this breather hose through the top of the timing side of the crank necessary? It’s not listed in the shop manual. As you can see, there is already a crank breather at the left side of the cam bushing for relieving pressure, Believing this timing side tube to be extra, I’ve already omitted it during the restoration. Since then I’ve noticed pictures of bikes with breather tubes in this spot. Have I made a mistake by removing it?
Timing side breather tube?

The cam breather was well known for not keeping up with blowby once the engine has some wear. That is why the extra breather was added.
For leak free riding you would be best off to eliminate both breathers and install a crankcase reed breather. Jim

If not worn rings enough for excessive blow by I've had dry sealed engine in a hard run Combat with just the TS cover hose and PCV valve up near the oil tank. My buddy Wes has a '71 with just the cam in hose and a PCV near the tank and his don't make a mess either. Not as good of low pressure evacuation as the reed valves but good enough for most of us.

+1 for sure! It eliminated a world of seeps weeps and leaks from mine

Thank you for the insight everyone.
I’m too far along to pull the engine and split cases again for a reed valve. I can pull the timing cover (again) and recreate that breather hole if I have too.
Do I understand correctly that there is pressure build –up in the oil bladder from the stock pressure relief hose connection? Is that what the PVC valve addresses? Which PVC valve is best to use?

If there is not a frame crosstube under the sump plug then you can use one of my sump plug breathers. Then there would be no mods needed. If there is a tube under the sump plug then I don't have a good answer -yet. Jim

Sounds interesting Jim. My frame cross tube is not under the plug. Can you provide some specifications and pictures of your sump plug breather? Dose it work well enough to omit the stock cam breather?

Here is a link with some pictures and instructions. You would want to remove both breathers. The tube from my breather would need to go to the top of the oil tank where the original breather line was connected. I am presently sold out so it will be a few weeks before the next batch is available. Jim

Wow Jim, that is above my expectations. A bit tall but it should be out of harms way. PM me with a price when you get more made up.
