while trying to adjust the slack in the timing chain on a 72 using the special tool blessed by Andover Norton, I am running into the usual slack-tight-slack-tight situalion but much more slack than usual. My theory is that the chain, when it wears, will aggravate this situation and that a new chain will minimize this headache. Correct? It's been a long time since I put in a new chain, do not remember exactly.
Also, when I installed the oil pump I noticed that there was a tight spot or two when turning the motor over with a wrench on the crank. I loosened the two nuts, turned the crank a few times and then tightened the nuts. The problem went away.

Both the chain and the sprockets will wear unevenly due to the uneven load on it. The standard Norton cam chain wears pretty quickly. Jim

I had always dismissed the sprockets as poor manufacturing but uneven wear due to uneven loading makes perfect sense. Have you or anybody tried nitriding or some other surface treatment to improve sprocket durability? Are there better sprocket options out there?

And how about the standard Norton chain - what are the options for improved. I know of Andychain but what have you used Jim?

I keep a stock of heavy duty chains from Andy. They are much tougher than the standard chain. Jim

Is the uneven sprocket wear due to the poor stock chain, and do you think with Andy's cam chain we could expect better sprocket life?
