850 commando , bike start after carb bowls are tickle fed , runs 4 a while then surges and dies . carbs are clean

What happens when you play with the Air screw.
Have you just cleaned the carbs.? Could you have altered the float level.

You have a fuel starvation problem. Try this. The instant it stops running, shut off the petcocks. Then drain the float bowls and see how much is in there. My bet is that your fuel supply is restricted somewhere between the tank and bowl and a clogged petcock is most probably your culprit. That surge you get before it dies is an indication of fuel starvation.

First make sure you have good flow from the petcock with fuel line removed. If you have unrestricted flow from the petcock, with the drain plug removed and fuel turned on you can see if you are getting good flow past the needle/seat without having to remove the bowl - I suspect you will see a mere trickle.

If that doesn't help then we need more info about what you've done - how it started etc.

Good luck

Mike

How long does it take to tickle them to where gas runs out of the tickler? 5 seconds? 10 seconds? longer?
I know you said they are clean but check the strainers anyway and make sure they are not crumpled up. Check the petcock strainer.

Take the line off and check flow. As Oldfart says :P , rebuild the petcock, usually just taking it apart, clean and lube it up.

Remove the plug on the bottom of the float bowls then turn the gas on and check flow there.
Report back.

As you might guess, I lean to a flow issue rather than a tuning issue. What kind of needle do you have in the seat, plastic or Viton tipped brass?

One might think that the float height might be a factor but if you can tickle it up within 3 to 5 seconds you shoould be fairly close. Some may suggest that the pin in the tickler is too low or high. Pretty rare though, unless one has fiddled in this area, as in changing the stinky finger tickler to a non stinky finger tickler.

Perhaps it just needs a bit of choke ?

A surge with no choke? I don't know if he even has a choke. I will bet the plugs are a little light, though.

It was a jacked up pet cock . the inside liner had moved to ware the hole 3/4 's blocked . delt with that . Thanks every one for your wisdom and continued patients

I had that happen with some of those rubber lined petcocks a few years ago. I would make it about four to six blocks from my home before it would start cutting out. Needless to say, the petcocks are long gone now. I did manage to drill out the rubber and get it shifted back into position, but then I turned one on one day, and the circlip popped out. I was left holding a handle whilst gas was p***ing out everywhere. I had to do the Dutch boy with a finger in the dike, since it was an almost full Interstate tank. Good thing I didn't drop the handle, and Vise-Gripped it on until I could drain the tank. That was it for Chinese crap petcocks for me. I either use BAPs, all brass OEM style from British Cycle, or the Miles Brake ones that I got at Baxters and British Bike Connection.

Absolute garbage, those taps - mine lasted all of 4 months until they crapped out and gummed up the works. I got a set of all-brass and they have been great since.
