so the spindle seems locked in on the swing arm....we haven't used an extractor yet. The spindle spins on the bushes so it looks like it's locked up on the cradle....any ideas?
thanks, Eric

Employ larger hammer.

If that fails, apply a blue-tipped smoke wrench.

Hi. The right side is threaded and you can insert a bolt to wiggle it and then pull it out. I forget which size bolt but I am sure that someone will add that info.

It's 1/2-20.

See this article about pulling the swingarm spindle.

1/2-20 bolt. make sure the small locating bolt is out or the top/middle of the craddle. Put a washer on the 1/2-20 bolt and use a pry bar or hook bar to pry it out. if you need to, you can use a slide hammer. last ditch, warm it up with the the torch.

gents.....I was being way too timid to knock it out...some penetrating thread spray.......a little warm and a bigger hammer......took a bit but worked....see below the spindle...how's it look? no corrosion per say but the play looked to be in the bushes when the end caps were off.
thanks for all the help.
Eric

Ludwig, do you think that spindle's no good? It looked okay to me.

I'm sure new bushings are needed, and now's a great time for the Heinz Kegler mod while you're in there....

PS, when I did bushings recently, I had to use the spindle and some valve grinding compound to loosen up the fit before installation. Thanks to Dave M for that tip.

Actually, I got a lot of good advice on various aspects of the job - see this thread to avail yourself of it:

My tip only works well if you thoroughly clean the grinding paste out of the bushes afterwards, the bronze bushes will otherwise retain the paste in the pores and cause subsequent wear.

Hi Dave. Yes, you pointed that out and you may be assured I was pretty anal about the cleanup. But worth pointing out for anyone who may be about to try.
