The Last Motorcycle On Earth

Looks interesting. The idea that the new technology will push the old out of existence via legislation is valid and a bit scary.

As a person who has recently spent some time aboard an electric bike, I can say they do work, they run plenty fast and all they need is range to put dinosaur juice on the shelf permanently. The part about autonomous vehicles taking away our driving privileges is also a part of the artificial intelligence debate.

All we need is a slam-bang remake of 2001-A Space Odyssey with plenty of CGI to hammer home the point about not giving up control.

After diesel gate, we have 100 times more tin boxes than 2 wheels pushing out high levels of air pollution that are killing more people off early through lung /chest related malfunctions- The UK is going to ban cars running on normal aspirated engines by 2040, so, bikes next?

Any provision for vintage machines? If not, Comnoz may have a good business selling his EFI...

'Some things are so bad that they are good'. I love 1970s muscle cars, but the fun police would have them all crushed and recycled. I love my old motorcycle for what it is, and not for what it could be. If I had an electric motorcycle, or a self-driving car, I would probably shoot myself. - Might be more exciting.

Which would you rather drive - an electric car or THIS ? :

A lot of things come down to values. What I really like about this forum, is the guys on it have some appreciation of what is good. An old commando is not the fastest bike on the planet, but it has a high intrinsic value. You can buy a very nice Ducati for the cost of a Commando - however it doesn't have the same worth.

Old Ducati's are pulling more money than Commandos these days some old SS models are going for over $40k+ even the old 450 Desmo's are going for high $$$ wish I kept that old 450 Scrambler all those years ago.

There was a young guy around here trying to sell a late model 750 Duke for about $8000, the other day - could not get a taker. Unfortunately he died of a heart attack, so it is of no consequence to him anyway. A bevel Ducati always brings good money.

Its the older ones that are making money, late model ones are hard to sell but the ones with orginal Conti mufflers etc sell for high price a mate we ride with his brother has collected old Ducati's all his life he was killed on one last year and his 750S orange tank model just sold for $40k without even being advertised.

Don't mess with 2001 A Space Odyssey it can't be made better!
Think about it, a "better" remake of a movie about computers taking over by using computers to make it better. Oh the irony!
No computers were used making it, oh hell the engineering school I went to shortly after it was made had 1 computer in the whole school! As far as I am concerned cgi is just a glorified cartoon. As a matter coincidence this past week was the 50th anniversary of the release of 2001.
As for old Ducs the biggest motorcycle mistake I ever made was selling a round case 750GT shortly before the prices went through the roof.

And strangely related...

Astronomers last week announced official names for the principal mountains and valleys of one of the solar system’s remotest objects, the tiny world of Charon. More than 3.6bn miles distant from the Sun, the moon – which orbits the dwarf planet, Pluto – was first observed closely in 2015 when the US probe New Horizons swept over its freezing, airless surface... As a result Kubrick Mons and Clarke Montes are now two of Charon’s major mountains.

Sometimes the messages in old films are lost on younger viewers because they can't relate and then they dismiss or marginalize important works. We have been watching a Netflix remake of Lost in Space and other than character names and premise, nothing is the same. Penny Robinson is an adopted black doctor. Dr. Smith is female also. Mr. and Mrs. Robinson were estranged before the flight takes place. The whole thing has soap-opera overtones about the family relationships. Of course the CGI blows the old sets with the wooden spaceships and paper plants right out of the water.

Have you ever seen the old move titled 'Gog' ? It's about the Lost In Space robot going mad with a laser. It burns a track in the wall at head height, right around one room. Had all of them ducking for cover.

The Last Motorcycle On Earth

Much more anthropomorphic, although it morphs into a murderous, multi-limbed spider/scorpion creature when it's pissed.

The robot I remember from Gog, looked like the Lost In Space robot, but he had a laser in his head. When he turned nasty he strafed the walls with it, burning a track around the room at head height. A robot which morphs is not really credible. The old movie was actually believable. It was the sort of thing that could happen if the boss gave a programmer a hard time.
BZZZT - You're DEAD ! - Like one of those UV fly traps.

The old movie was actually believable

Especially the English-speaking aliens and the breathable atmosphere on an previously uncharted planet.

The Netflix series is the third go-round for Lost in Space. First a network TV series, second a trashy Hollywood remake with lots of explosions and cleavage.

I was referring to Gog. It was Earth - bound - not lost in space. The robot in the clip I pasted was not the one which got really nasty and tried to burn people with the laser. The one that did that LOOKED like the Lost in Space robot. Must have appeared later in the movie. I'm going from memory - I saw the movie when it was first released in the 50s. It was really great the way they got the burn mark to appear right around the wall of a laboratory, with the laser beam coming from the robot. Might have been done with a line of pyrotechnic compound.
