Can anyone tell me if there is a problem with the Taylor Head Steady banging on the underside of the fuel tank? I seem to remember reading somewhere that some kind of modification had to be made to the head steady to prevent that from happening. On the last ride of the season
I noticed that when I hit a bump in the road I could hear something hitting the tank. Now that winter cabin fever has set in I figured I should look into this before spring arrives. Thanks for your help.

Re: Taylor Head Steady 73 Commando

It was the Norvil headsteady that fouled the tank.

Drats, I thought I'd hear something like "oh yea, just move it 2 degrees to the left and your done" I guess I'll have to start digging into it from a different angle. Thanks.

Take the tank off and look carefully as you loosen the nuts and also look for witness marks under the tank, it is tight under there and could be a number of things.

Hi Bent rod, I had tried the RGM Taylor head Steady , with their alloy fastback , and it hits underneath , whatever I tried , so end ofthe story.........it was for a buddy's bike , we went back for the normal head steady , and I took it back home waiting for a trial under my own roadster tank...........

Re: Taylor Head Steady 73 Commando

Double check everything else, I was just out ridding and heard a sound that was in my mind definitely coming from the tank being hit by something. When I got home I found that one of the front disc brake caliper bolts had been lost and at idle the "clank" of it hitting the fork transferred up and resonated sounding just like the tank being hit. It was uncanny. I had just rebuilt the caliper, mounted it & only snugged up the bolts to fit the pipe & my new been I MC. After all the hose changes & bleeding I forgot to go back & torque the bolts. Feeling stupid but at least not dead!

So the Taylor Head Steady didn't work under the RGM Tank but will work under a roadster tank?

Hi, just said that it did not fit under the Alloy fastback tank we bought from RGM , but dunno if the underneath of that particular alloy is the same as the other original tanks , we were just missing few mm , to continue I do not have yet tried it with my own steal roadster tank, will do it soon !

Yes I have a Taylor Head Steady and found the ball did strike the tank tunnel on the left side.
Just saw some rub marks through the paint.
Didn't hear or feel anything while riding and since rub didn't look much I left it alone after double checking its alighment.

I removed the tank, didn't have to look to far to find the cause of the clunking. I thought the bikes handling was a little flaky.

Looks like Nevr-Seez residue....

Had same experience with a Taylor and my aluminum replica Fastback tank. Got out a soft faced small hammer and made the necessary "adjustments" on the tank bottom!
No noise and no problem.

Where I served my time (UK truck industry) we called that 'fettling' - a genuine 'engineering skill', performed by a Fettler
Some of them were my friends... :D
