Hi - thought I'd just pass on the details of this web site '2nd Skin Autographics' producing tank protectors kindly forwarded on by Jason on NOC forum after we admired the one on his bike at the Wharf meet-up. No commercial connections whatsoever etc...

Useful as a jeans zip protector for us well-endowed 961 riders.

(Well endowed in the pie-eating department that is)

A bloke I was talking to had a Honda one on his 961 . Ordered one off e bay but item never came so still looking .
always best to put one on

Tank protectors are a bit of a pain on these bikes...

After buying, and binning, 5 or 6 pretty shit protectors off of eBay, I bought the clear plastic kit recommended by someone on here, the pics of it on their bike looked awesome. The kit included the rear protector and two side protectors for the knee scallops.

I am obviously too kack handed for such a delicate job as, try as I did, I could not make a neat job of it. I suspect a black tank is the worst colour for this as ANY imperfection shows up badly.

It’s not made any easier by the very curvaceous tank design either!

I ended up butchering the kit, cutting my own shape out for the rear of the tank that minimised the difficulties of the curves and not using the sides at all. It looks ‘ok’.

It’s still on... until I find something better.

I notice that Norton expressed their displeasure at this guy for using the Norton name. That sucks. Instead of doing that, why didn’t they get him to become their supplier of genuine Norton tank protectors that we could all then buy?!?

Thanks for the update - I was on the cusp of ordering one of these kits. They also do a square sheet but I faffed around with some helicopter tape and could not get it to fit the curvaceous tank so I suspect the same would be true with this stuff. Maybe use it for the knee protectors on the side and one of these formed protectors at the back.

Re the Norton brand - I checked with Clem when I put the Norton logo on the back of my jacket :- if this guy was selling Norton branded bits off the shelf I could understand it but these are personal design requests...

This is what Steve’s doing for me. Will post pics as soon as fitted...

Contact Steve at the web site shown above and knock yourself out!

He’s very helpful, and very quick at turning your thoughts into draft images.

Steve’s quality, as well as service, is spot on!

However, having fitted mine, I’m now beginning to side with Britfans thinking and kinda think that straight gloss black might look better...

I like it. I like solid black better though. I think I'll ask if the checkered flag can be changed to a US flag in gold. After all, the bike is "over here".

I have never had a problem with tank scratching. I'm 6ft 1 and 99kgs last time i got on the old scales, 38inch waist although marks and spencers trousers do have comfort fit technology incorporated. My belstaff 25 year old jacket doesn't have a pokey out zipper, maybe that's why although i do have a newer frank thomas jacket that does get a little nearer the tank. I think these protectors look really good and I may go for one. But if you scratch them up, wont they be an absolute pig to remove.

A heat gun softens up the glue of things like this making them easy to remove.

My short and dumpy build means that much of the first 5inches of the tank get pretty scuffed by jacket and/or trousers. I need a protector real bad before I wear the paint thru, I have an idea for a home grown affair but it will need a few hours of tinkering in the garage to get it right.

omg what are your creating now, if its good as the seat, it will be a masterpiece. I think you're after the next months £100 prize

Well, carbon effect didn’t do it for me guys. So I went for solid black. It looks MUCH better IMHO.
Actually, it made me think that clear is probably the best option... especially for those of you with ‘funny’ paint schemes (read: anything that’s not black, or silver)...
