Most living things are creatures of habit. How often do ya just hop on and go vs doing disciplined walk around pre flight exam? Personally I'm known to be lazier than smart, so Commando let downs sure improved my l/d ratio, aka, HLDYFP!
So whats your ritual check list? My minimum is tire kicks and brake check. On the flip side what do ya do after ya shut it down, each and every time vs every now and then. I always get caught out by loose carb fasteners, ugh, just prior to my every now and then. Ohh, just remembered why there's a little dome nut/bolt on my table and where it was supposed to go. Shoe eves are lurking eveerywhere and they are not your friends in the fairly tales...

My bike never uses oil between oil changes so nomly I just check tyre pressure once a week, I look in the oil tank but never needs topping up, check chain every so often then go, if the bike feels diffrent when out then I will go over it when I get home but I never have much troubles with bolts or nuts coming loose, other than that I just do the usaual maintenance every 2,500 miles when I go over the whole bike, as for shutting my bike down when I get home all I do is turn off the fuel taps, give my bike a little tap on the tank and say "good ride today bike, well done" it don't have a name I just call it bike.

Did I put on my helmet ? Don't laugh ,has happened 3 times so far and Alma forgot to just a week ago. No, not age creeping up. Other than that the biggie is tires.

One of the first things I do is check the rear brake switch and light. On my bike at least it tells me the ignition switch is on and the battery is working, plus I know the brake lamp is good. Other than that regular stuff.

Batrider,
Thanks for the checklist, now all I need is a DA Form 2408-13 for my writeups on post-ride

My routine is pretty much just like ashman's, including a "well done" pat on the tank when done. :)

good thread, Steve

have now added turning the petcocks off 1/4 mile from home so float bowls have little gas overnight

ethanol in today's gas sometimes causes my flat slide carb's floats to stick and over pour gas.....

this tip from Jim Schmidt of JS flat slide carb fame, among many other Norton creations!

Ugh, I have done the long list batrider posted, sometimes on side of road...
I don't feel that close to Trixie to pat her routinely but she is an good Combat so I have patted her like a good horse after a good ride.

I shut off taps while letting idle down before shut off to leave least fuel wash in jugs and lower fuel in bowls a bit, which reminds me to check carb fasterns I had to nip up a couple rides ago d/t bad sounds and misfires on let offs.

I try to leave crank near TDC but a bit confused on how to do that as KS reaches hard resistance by step on but then after a few seconds KS decends a 1/4 turn more till meeting new hi resistance, which I assume is some bleed down to let piston the rest of the way close to TDC. I"ve not looked in yet to know for sure.

About every 3rd tank of gas I check oil level on shut down or before next start.
I also check brake fluid as had that blow away once for complete loss of brake immediately after last very effective pull down while zipping around for almost last terror crash to make the turn.

About every 200 miles I have to snug drive chain again, as I'm a dry guy in hi grit so try to keep chain so don't lift much out of valleys on back side of sprocket.

Gear box weeps some so check that about once a season 4=5000 miles.

I just took the MSF mc safety course so I'm cheating but it only takes a few minutes to go over the bike with this T-CLOCS method before heading off. My bike has been pretty stable maintenance-wise (and I pretty much stay local anyway) so I don't always do the whole drill but it is a good checklist. (I'd do it before heading off on a trip.)

Turning off the taps before stopping? What a lame fix.
