I wonder if someone could help me with some measurements?

I am after the distance between the dropouts on the early commando swingarms, and the width of a built up axle/spindle.

My slimline featherbed swingarm is 8" between the dropouts, and the built up axle/spindle is 8 1/4" so I need to flex the swingarm slightly to get the wheel in.

I am trying to determine if the early Commando is the same.
I am aware that the later Commandos are offset slightly, so the hub doesn't quite run center, but I believe the early one are centered?

Thanks as always for your help in advance! :D

I have some information on that somewhere. I'll get back with you.

I went through this with madass140 when I bought his single piece rear axle. Seems the 750 rear swing arm measures 8-11/16" outside the swing arm axle mounting points. That's where the two large flat washers would bear when you tighten down the axle nuts. His axle will bolt up just right and show no threads on the nut if you haven't powder coated the mounting areas for the axle and the brake cover plate. I had a total of 5 coats of powder in those spaces and when I tightened down his axle, I had about 1/4" or more showing threads in the nut. Plus it was a bit tight getting everything in there, but I never had to force anything (much).

There was also a thread about that space that went on for a while about the early bikes not long ago. I'll see if I can find it if you like, but the 8-11/16" is right. If you need to add or change parts to get that measurement, something's probably wrong. I'm not sure how important it is that the measurement be precise, but I'm sure that's the way it came out of the factory and I know some get real sticky about making things right.

The madass140 single piece axle is real nice, I don't see why they didn't do it that way from the start. He replaces that stub axle with a sliding piece over the single axle bolt that looks like the stub axle. I think it's even easier to take things apart and put back together and you don't have to worry about over stressing the bolt into the stub axle.

Yes - I have one of madass's one piece axles - nice bit of kit!

Specifically wha I would like to know is the distance between the insides of the swingarm drop outs - that is what is 8" n a slimline featherbed, and what I think may be the same n the commando?

Cheers!
