Just got back from 10 days in kiwi [ nth island ] only had a hire car , got to get back there with the norton some day .
BEAUTIFULL roads , loved it .

New Zealand and Tasmania are two of the most beautiful places on the planet - both have no work available for people who don't love sheep. That is probably the reason that they are so good. Did you meet anyone called Baaasil while you were there ?

Thanks for the quality heads up on NZ and our roads, I moved back here 4 years ago after being an expat for 30 years, love it.
One of the main reasons I bought the C'do for the thrill of open , picturesque and twisty highways.
Regards Mike

If you like the North Island wait until you see the South Island!

Hey guys, I will be in Christchurch, New Zealand for about 4 weeks in February, do you know any dealers/shops that carry Norton parts?

Yes , I would love to see the sth island, heard a lot about it , but 10 days is way too short , need a month for each .
Born and bred in Tassie so no real surprises but a nice reminder of what it was like .
Has any body shipped a bike to NZ or vice versa ? Much expense or drama ?
Didnt see any nortons on the road while I was there . Looks like your best weather is just starting , so happy rideing to all you Kiwi Norton owners .

Decemberist, look up the Britten museum in Christchurch if its reopened yet. It's a bit hard to find but worth a look.
If you have time to get south to Invercargil look up Heyes hardware to see all kinds of old bikes including Burt Monro's Velocette and Indian, and one of the movie bikes (Ducati engine)
Good roads, people, food and coffee.
Recommend Speights hotels and bars, all over the island.

Graeme

Hey Decemberist
I'm living in CHCH but there's not much around as far as bike shops catering to brit bikes, especially now from the EQ's, it's all online now. Take yourself out to Akaroa , it's the best road for a norton ( stop for a pie and pint at hill top)and it's right on my back door. You bringing a bike along with you down here?

MY way , ITs the Highway . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZxk6bJY ... re=related THOUGH THIS is Kaitia going South , Mamamuka George .

Unfortunately , :? were good cond for 18 months after reseal , stuffed for next two years . Slipery slimey melted tarr bumps from SEMIs . :x
When there good , theyre GOOD . Frost at daybreak can stuff up the equation though , and fogged windows .Seen a semi inverted head on concrete bridge culvert ( over the wet bit ) assume he swereved exiting bend for halfwit in drive on Rt. Nelson / blenhem road . But WERE Always CAREFULL , Arnnt WE .

More Roads in Aeotearoa .

February is the best time to visit New Zealand.

I agree about British Spares in Nelson (northern South Island) for the best parts dealer. Mostly e mail or phone but you can call in I think. Address on web.

Just so you know. Accomodation may be tight in Christchurch. Construction is being to start after the big earthquake and accomodation is in short supply.

You must do a trip over the Southern Alps. Across Arthurs Pass, down the West Coast, over the Haast Pass and back up through the McKenzie country. On the other hand north to Nelson via Lewis Pass (or the Kaikoura Coast Road) and back down the Buller Gorge and down to Greymouth ain't too bad either.

Hey Decemberist, what dates in February are you in CHCH , as the NOC of NZ Annual Rally and AGM is on in Collingwood on the 1-3rd of Feb?
Collingwood is at the top of the South Island close to Nelson , where the Brit Spares are. not really that far from CHCH
Here is an email of Brtish Motorcycle Spares , he is in Auckland, all mail order , and as you are there for 4 weeks could be a good contact to source sprares.
Make sure you have a .pdf copy of you parts catalog with you as Tim needs the numbers for ordering as a cross check.

Enjoy

No, unfortunately my bike will be stored in NY for the Winter. I was hoping to rent a bike for the month, although I will have to get used to driving on the opposite side of the road. Thanks for the info on where to find good eats and beer I will definitely make it a mission to get there.

Hey guys,

I am so looking forward to visiting the South Island at Christmas. My mum, sis and family live there. Is there any classic racing or related stuff going on in the Oamaru area latter half of December?

Cheers-Jerry

Am happy to make sure your stay in chch is a good one, come over for dinner or I'll take you out, If you need any gear (bike stuff, tools, camping etc) will do what I can. My bikes been lurking somewhere down the back of the garage a few years now so I'll have to dust her off and maybe we do that run for a pie & pint together. Just get in touch if you want.

I have to go to Oamaru where ever that is as my family are there. Might take you up on the pie and pint. I'll be in touch nearer the time. Have to fly from la to nadi, then to Auckland, and then Christchurch where we are staying in a hotel and my sis will pick us up next day. Going to be a long haul 20 hours or more.

I am only going to nz for a short time unfortunately due to work. Last time I was there saw some great classic racing, but cannot remember where it was. Manx ripping past 5 feet away with only straw bales between us.

Im told its 100 Miles , from Omaru to Timaru . The road has one corner in the middle .

An old N.Z. tradition is to do it in One Hour . Might pay to send a decoy ahead .
