I have just started to get my 850 Commando engine bits out of storage and to get the engine put back together.

When I opened the boxes up there was a couple of spots on the big end journals and on the connecting rod end caps.

Can i use a very fine wet and dry paper to remove the rust? Most of it wiped off after putting on WD-40.

Don't worry one iota, been there done that no problemo, the slight abrasive is not an issue here for two reasons, one it surfs on oil layer and two the shells are designed to trap grip below the oil layer thickness. Could just a well grind the rust out for low spots as would be less determental than the useless rod oil jet and crank feed hole. If on a roller element bearing then it'd be toast too soon to use.

My shed is over top an under ground water path and in a bit of a hollar so air gets as water filled as sprayed and steamy shower. Only way I can keep parts long term is sealed in tin or food grade plastic jars. Parts exposed over night or so get engine oil or real grease as real condensation will float wd40 and white Li grease on top with rust stained patches below. Wife thinks I've metal fetish d/t keeping Peel project in living room but its more economics of not loosing expensive surfaces.

I retrieved x-Ms Peel iron barrel, I thot I'd never use again, from shed-shop to find bare areas covered in rust, that don't seem to have hit pitting stage, so will put in bucket of white vinegar and check on it till clean enough to hone and re use. There are electro methods too that don't remove material like sanding can. Mostly i wire brush rust off many things especially threads, which tends to burnish smooth.

That’s nothin’!

I put a new blasted cylinder block in the dishwasher (to ensure all blast media scrupulously cleansed)...

And it came out looking like it had been recovered from 50 years on the sea bed.

DOH !!!

I've been using a mixture of 25% Backstrap Molasses and 75% distilled water on gun parts for a couple of years with great success. Currently soaking some Norton Parts. Only issue is time, takes about 3-4 weeks on a heavily corroded cap lock barrel and accessories.
