You know how it is, an innocent conversation ends up with you buying more stuff that’ll sit on a shelf in the shed...

Well, at least I’m prepared for the day when my injection system frustrates me to the point of ripping it all off...

Stupid boy

This is the first bike I've owned with an ECU. How will that affect it?

I don’t know! I rather suspect it would need removing and replacing with something like a carb Hinckley Bonnie system.

Fitting them would be a big job. I don’t actually have any plans to do so, but they came up for sale, so I thought I’d have ‘em.

They are the actual carbs fitted by Kenny, I bought them from him, so they should even be jetted to go!

The title of the thread is ‘stupid boy’ after all...!

Nigel, what did Kenny Dreer use as an ignition system on his bikes, was it designed by him or an off the shelf ?

So glad I'm not the only one who does that!

I think they can be stored away until the next "Low Price 961" appears on eBay or Craigslist.
If you can get the 961 on the cheap, you can turn into a faithful Dreer 961 Replica - with carbs.

If you ever see a photo of the original Dreer 961, you’ll notice that the timing cover has a “points” cover like classic Nortons.
The new 961’s don’t have one.
Kenny probably used an electronic ignition setup like the ones available for old Nortons today, with magnetic or optically triggers.

When I have time I’ll take a look and see if I can help. I have all the original cad files and test data. But there were so many variants its a mess to make sense of what’s what.

Regarding ign.

Kenny started out with a Boyer! As BritTwit pointed out, the initial ign pick up was on the cam. Later he worked with Power Arc.

In the later 961 stages, he went to a crank triggered system, on the LHS, where it still is.

Sadly, not ‘off the shelf’ stuff available.

Maybe it’s not such a daft idea to speak to Steve at Tri-Spark...

Photo warms the hearts of old carb guys like me.
The Red Max Speed Shop is the home of the Swindler 961.

I know someone who is progressing with a carbed 961.
The new owner of my bike actually.

Taking it slowly as he is also getting his head around the FI as well now with PowerCommander etc so not as desperate.

Anyway...this is the parts list so far
Keihin FCR 39..lots of jetting to be done
CDU pickup from Triumph Scrambler
Different/programmable igniters/coils (dunno maybe he is just hedging bets there)

No immobilisers/tricking ECU so that's good at least

If i learn anything more will post but he is more into fixing the engine bearings right now.

The right guy for my bike. Competent, not stressed and doesn't need to ride often.
