Strange pistons

As it says in the ad.:
"Norton Commando 750cc 06-3356 +.040" PAIR piston assemblies.
Genuine Norton pistons from a Norton Distributor with another set of valve pockets to use these left hand pistons on the right side, in place of 06-3356 and 06-3357 with the usual single set of cut outs for the valves."

Wow.

I think you’d deserve some kind of prize if you voluntarily fitted these to your engine!

There was a glut of left handed or right handed pistons (can't remember which) on the market some years back
Have a guess which bearded proprietor sold brand new Norton commandos with these fitted ?

Ha!

He gets the prize then!

I have a set of 06-3356 +.040" and mine are AE19145A which makes them deep groove piston rings. Therefore are NOT split top pistons. They would not be my first choice, but would use them if cheap enough.
Because of the lack of genuwine BHB manxman pistons, which according to AJD are the best in the world, my freind had this treatment done to the two BHB RH pistons he was able to acquire for his manxman.

Yes, bearded Misery also sold these pistons also for 500cc Nortons, 25 years ago. One of my customers complained about his GB imported hotrod Dominator that it is pinking badly when driven hard. Compression did not seem too high as it was easy to kick over, so I checked ignition and carburation. Nothing wrong there so the head came off. No high comp pistons but they had the same 4 valvepockets. I changed the pistons to proper stuff and the problem was gone....

I had a set of 850 pistons I sent to a machine shop to be flycut for use with a milled head and oversize valves. When I picked them up they had cut four reliefs in each. After a lot of hemming and hawing, the shop admitted that they cut both pistons the same, then realizing their mistake, cut both pistons again to "match"!! Needless to say they bought me another set.

it is a backhanded way of reducing the compression and adding convoluted surface area to cause preignition.... do not linger, walk away .. really fast.
