hi I am cleaning the clutch plates on my 72 commando project should the steel plates be smooth or roughed up ...deglazed...as BSA/Triumph plates? many thanks...ps I cleaned the bronze ones with brake cleaner and a stiff brush followed by a very light burnishing with a fine sanding sponge...
many thanks again

Deglazed; you got it. F-type ATF once you're done. Don't overfill it. Expect much contradictory posts to follow soon.

Nathan

I like to use wet/dry sandpaper taped to a sheet of glass as it also shows me whether or not the plates are warped. Small imperfections can be removed.

I'm a big fan of getting rid of the bronze plates.

*Contradictory post!* Just kidding ... It's good to see someone keeping the standard friction plates, the standard Commando clutch really is one of the best I've ever used, the only problem I've encountered being when gear oil migrates through the mainshaft: that's hardly the fault of the clutch, and surely we all know how to sort that out now, no? (hint! courtesy of DynoDave – I'm in the UK and even I've got one) [edit conflict: so I'm afraid I'm a big fan of keeping the bronze plates!]

I have a 14" diameter glass plate out of an old microwave oven I use to scuff triumph/bsa clutch plates by taping sheet of fine emery cloth to...will do same for commando........thanks...ps need link to dynodave for seal kit

He's on this forum, I expect you can ping him from here, or he might pop up himself – otherwise I expect someone here can put you in touch!

Roughing up clutch plates is a Band-Aid cure. They are designed to be, and work properly without added texture. Instead, address the other issues plaguing it.

was mainly curious about original finish of steel ones...glassy smooth or lightly 'textured'
thanks again
