I'm just beginning the process of upgrading/rebuilding my starter motor (already a 4 brush conversion) and there are several posts but mostly a good few years old. Has anyone got actual instructions as to how to undertake this rebuild/upgrade?

One thing I have never found mentioned is how do you replace the bushes in the end caps? I have no idea how you get these out (especially the blind one in the brush end cap)?

Apparently it is possible to replace the drive end one with a needle roller/sealed ball bearing. Has anyone done this? Does it need machinework to get it achieved?

Is it OK to use the Accel standard field coils or should I use the Accel hi-torque ones?

I like the look of the Prestolite and fancy the challenge - if it doesn't work out I'll buy a Dave Comeau SM, but somehow it looks not quite right...;-)

Many thanks in advance,

There is a retired gentleman Bruce Coplestone in Auckland NZ who had the Lucas agency in Auckland, he has been overhauling starters all his life still has lots of tooling. He also does Prestolites, I recently asked Bruce if he could overhaul my original starter and convert to a 4 pole very pleased with the job fast turnaround, and a wealth of knowledge, the starter is like new has plenty of torque, reasonably priced upgrade very please I did it. His contact is bccoplestone@xtra.co.nz
