was mucking around with my desmo today and found the sweet spot for the timing it was at 28 btdc for a start erring on the careful side ,i adavanced it to 32 degrees and still no pinging on super unleaded pump fuel , i checked my squish clearance with solder through the plug hole and with a hot engine its 30 thou
it says a lot for a shallow bathtub head and a small squish with 2 plugs
i can kickstart it now and it even ticks over reluctantly
now ive got good base settings il get a
wosner piston 'my mate is an agent for them ' i can get to milling the valve pockets deeper so i can retard my valve timing a bit more and get the rpm up
id like to try and get a bigger inlet in there too such is the life of a tinkerer

If your thinking about Wossner pistons - take a look at the 73mm Wossner piston below - designed for Nortons. It has the deeper pockets you need. I have them in stock.

squish clearance .

might rattle a wee bit
my motor is 100mm bore it uses at the moment aKawasaki klr 650 piston flat top with four tiny cut outs ,i milled pockets to accept the 2 valve set up
i ve been looking to find a,totaly flat 100 mm or slightly oversize piston the honda nx 650 looks pretty near it
i removed quite a lot of metal on the kawasaki piston to lighten it and would probably have to weld up the areas below the pockets
have to study my mates wossner book
some lovely pistons eg ducati ,honda crf ,yamaha xt660 ,porsche all around 100 mm bore ,

As you are interested in Desmo's I will try to post a short vid of me clumsily starting up the Ducati 125 desmo works TT bike from 1958. It was recently paraded at Malory park. If I had a spare 40k and space I would have bought it by now. But at least I get to fiddle with it

Its possible that I could convert my 250 Ducati to desmo faster than working out how to post a vid, May have to ask my lamb, (the boss).

Wish I had your skills, did a bit of turning ,brazing etc at school (60 years ago) ,always wanted to be an engineer, might have room now for a lathe ,getting a bit old for learning now. Bit spoiled as my local engineer (an old top grass track racer) has all the machines and skills to do anything so it seems pointless. I just hand him the bits, say nothing and it comes back perfect!!.

ihad the luxury of a local machinist who used to make cranks for vincents who indeed did the bottom end re machining
line boring and surfacing it all after welding ,however he took ill and i had to
invest in a big old ,Dean Smith and grace lathe and a few more bits and bobs
its a lot easier to make the bits ifind than have to explain to a non biker machinist
what you need
the welding fabrication bit is easy
it just takes a lot of time
