Looking for a Green blobb speedo for my 72 Commando Can swap an NVT
If you don't find one, you can have the NVT version re-faced with the Green Globe type.
Cheers, I was considering going down that route.
That's what I did. I was having trouble with my original speedo. I bought a similar one off ebay to canibalize for parts. The parts speedo worked, so I just swapped out the face plates. I should repair the original,... I actually bought the repair book for magnetic instruments to be able to trouble shoot my instruments. I lent it out to someone and they have yet to do their repair either... These instruments are not simple to repair... I got lucky with my ebay purchase which spared me from extensive google searching and buying replacement parts for hit and miss surgery.
Thanks for that, I suspect I will send my speedo away to one of the specialists as the ring around the face is a bugger.
Actually replacing the ring is simple. The internal mechanism is beyond imagination, and how it was engineered to be accurate is unfathomable. The cable spins a magnet that is suspended below a disk of aluminum which has a very fine watch spring mechanism attached to it. Did you know that aluminum is "slightly magnetic"??? so the spinning magnet induces a small amount of rotation in the aluminum disk, which is balanced against the spring mechanism to which the instrument's pointer is attached. The guy who developed this should be given a medal (because it can work pretty well) and put away in a mental facility because only a crazy person could invent such a thing....
I can't see "fixing" the watch spring mechanism. I think you just replace the whole thing if it's suspect. The rest of the repairs seemed to be inspecting parts for wear, and cleaning to restore the moving parts to their original state so the magical balance of magnetism and watch spring resistance is restored...
Have paid to have both clocks rebuilt over the years , when I want accurate I put iPhone on handlebar and use speedbox ....
I have one of the green blob speedos from a now-gone '72 roadster that might work for you. The glass face is cracked so you would probably want to replace that, and the chrome trim ring is scuffed on the left edge. The speedo is still in the mounting cup so would come with that in place. Also have the green blob tachometer from the same bike available. PM me for details and/or photos, and if interested let me know where you are located so I can have some sense of what shipping cost might be.
Hi yes would certainly be interested, I'm in Pershore nr Worcester.
Hi Utaprof you can get me on my email email@example.com or 0789439838. Some pics would be helpful.
Photos sent to your email address.
If you still have the green blob tach, I am interested.
) hi I haven't got a Green blob speedo, but I am looking for a Green Globe, problem is Utaprof has one but shipping costs to UK are silly money so will try and find one closer to home. Cheers
When Ninja was inquiring about my speedo a few weeks ago he also had some interest in the tach, at least until we learned that shipping/import tax costs to the UK were so costly. To make sure things worked properly before finalizing a deal I hooked both the speedo and tach up to my on-the-road Commando, and learned that while the speedometer was operational the tach was not -- the needle would just jiggle a bit with revs but would not move up the dial. So, while I do still have the tach, it is not operational and would likely need to be sent in for a rebuild.
I do still have the speedometer, which is operational, and was thinking of trying to swap out the trim ring and glass from the tach to the speedometer but haven't given that a try yet... maybe if someone ends up wanting the speedometer at some point I'll try to go that direction.
Rick, Thanks for getting back to me. I have been traveling so I wasn't able to get right back to you. I understand the situation and your plan going forward. My speedo is the green globe (not blob - dang spell checker), but the tach on this bike is the later type with the curvy arrows. I'd like to match with the speedo. I'll keep looking.
