Does anyone suffer from the speedo needle jumping about? Speedo is the standard Green spot version, Cable is a new one, the speedo can jump from around 60 to the occasional 90, but is more stable at lower speeds?

Is the speedo cable cable-tied to the swing arm? You may have to slightly rotate the drive unit to ensure the smoothest possible cable run. Doing this finally cured five years of faffing around with rebuilt speedo, new cable and new speedo drive; my speedo was going berserk over 40mph and is now near as dammit perfect.
I have found the original smiths gearbox has a square drive hole slightly different
than the repros on offer. My genuine cable didnt fit the repro gearbox. Others
are correct about routing the cable.
Went out for a shake-down ride with my Bud who's 99% finished with a restoration on a 1970 750 high-rider....original yellow to boot. Heading out on SR60 over Tampa Bay to open the resto bike up I was following at 65 -75 mph and noticed my tach at 5 grand and only going 65 mph or so....I thought WTF, great....now either my speedo or tach is acting up. Got caught by a red light at the eastern end of the Causeway...downshifted for the light and realised I had been cruising in 3rd gear. Proper shifting after the light revealed all was well....guess I haven't been riding enough lately.
