Solex carb

According to the advert the carb was removed from a working Norton engine. If so, why was it removed? My guess, it never worked very well. No one takes a well setup carb off their well running bike to sell on eBay.

On the other hand, it might be worth asking that question of the person who took it off – why? Maybe they wanted to fit standard carbs for appearance – all things are possible. But, never having seen a twin-bore Solex carburettor, I've no idea how good or otherwise it might be for a Commando. If one were sufficiently curious it might be interesting to find out – carbs like that work well on the engines for which they're intended, and the bores are a suitable size. I'd be more concerned about the efficiency of those home-made 'manifolds' – if they were good and I had the time and means to experiment, I could be tempted.

Just saw this on ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SOLEX-C3...437332?hash=item1a63ad1594:g:dPkAAOSwEYpb2TOX

Has any one experience with a solex carb on a commando?

It may say Solex, but it isn't that removed from a twin choke DCOE Weber or the equivalent Dellorto. I have driven cars that used them. They are a popular choice on '70s modified Fords and MGs and the Dellortos were standard fit on some Italian cars. They have even been used as single choke with one choke blanked where race rules prohibited twin chokes!

Used on drag bikes more than road racers, but quite rare on bikes, mainly I think because they are complex to set up since you can pretty much change everything about it including teh effective bore!

Ignore the 32 it may or may not be 32mm bore at the jets, '40 DCOEs' were mainly used with the actual choke bore set by the tubular insert, from memory of hotted up 1600 Fords mostly at around 32!

They have a mechanical accellerator pump and the Dellorto as used on Alfa Romeos have no choke mechanism, just pump the pedal a couple of times, fire up and set the hand throttle until warmed through!

They are a decent carb and that manifold does not look very restrictive. I suspect it worked fine and was removed because someone didn't know anything about it, or just wanted to go with twin Amals!

Complex to set up is an understatement. Let's see, pick a venturi size, float level needle and seat, accel jet size, when it starts to pump, how fast it pumps, emulsion tubes, more jets than the air force of a small nation. And you have to get them to work together, kinda like a rubik's cube.

I have only ever seen one very modified commando chop with a weber fitted
The owner was very happy with it,it certainly sounded good
