morning folks , has anyone put a small seat on an 11a ? i know the difference between the two so would assume a bracket( rather than weld prongs on) would have to be made with prongs on and fixed to the frame somehow ?

I am going the smaller solo seat route on my late P11 Ranger. My plan is to draw up a template at the upper rear shock inner plate profile on my late style frame. I'll make a pair of plates to this profile and add the hooked pins brazed and bent, L/H and R/H or maybe with a bar across. It will still be reversible if I later want to change back to a longer seat. The main top shock bolts will hold this in place. I am thinking on a similar design type of a Corbin seat setup for the Commando. I'm still working on it.

hi thomas , that was my thought as well , some sort of bracket arrangement to fit the shock top mounts , hmmmm will see what i can come up with and see what you do too !
mr elefantrider , i have a p11a but like the p11 styling so want the option to fit a small seat but still revert back to dual seat if the wife wants a ride !!!

i tried to find a useable photo to compare side view of both chassis P11 and P11A.
Didn't have any luck with good P11A side view.

Bracket at P11A shock upper mounts looks appropriate.

My feeling is that the high pipes/shorty mufflers alone really strike the P11 look.
The larger P11 tank and double striping are visual queues as well.

Sliding back on a P11A seat would be an sought after advantage.

This will show you the seat style between the series, compared with the pictures that p400 has posted above. I think the ranger seat is even longer?
A little note: If you notice the tach gearbox is incorrect for the exhaust system. This is for a high piper I think. The low pipe on display should have had the output cable coming out more vertical.

I have apart both P11 and P11A bare frames (121... , 122... and 124...).

Because of the front mount for the rear fender you may have a gap when using the short seat on a P11A frame. Both fenders end under the seat. The front mount on the P11A is welded to the rear fender loop where the P11 mount is actually a tube brazed between the frame tubes. I don't have a P11A fender in the shop to compare length, but I believe the P11A is somewhat shorter. Of course you could use a Ranger 750 fender which extends all the way to the main frame tube, but you would need to add a mounting tab to the frame.

In any event, using a short seat on a P11A is more feasible than trying to use a P11A seat on a P11 frame.

That is a reproduction or rebuilt Ranger 750 seat. The Ranger 750 seat is the same seat as a late N15 but with a funky bracket added to bolt to the top shock mounts. It uses a single pin on the frame to hold the nose of the seat.

the tach gearbox is correct - it's the timing cover which is wrong.

Haven't been on for a while - work has been hectic.

That bracket can be easily made from flat stock - 1" wide by 1/8" thick - similar to the brackets that hold the mufflers. I heard the original was two L-shaped brackets, but I made mine from a single U-shaped piece. The center length would be the same as the distance between the frame rails. The legs are around 3-3/4" long, with the slot to engage the shock top bolt starting at 3". The seat pan has inserts for bolting the bracket to the pan. If the inserts are not there, nuts can be used under the seat cushion to capture the mounting bolts.

The mounting is similar to the front bracket on an N15CS seat, or the mounting bracket on a Commando. Like the Commando, the shock top bolt holds the bracket in place (without the fancy commando knurled knob)
