Now that Simon is a forum member I thought I would resurrect one of my favorite threads.

Simon,
Is there a reason why US dealers can not order the shorter 961 side stand that is apparently available in Canada?
My dealer has told me that the part number does not exist for them to order.

Hi BritTwit

We only manufacture one size side stand, however we did make it shorter around about 12 months ago. Our P/N is 6080047 and it measures 209 mm from the centre of the pivot to the centre of the foot plate. There should be no reason that USA dealers are unable to order this part.

Simon,

OK great, so if my dealer orders 6080047 today, he will get the short stand, which is now the only stand available for the 961.

Thank you.

Hi Brit Twit,

I would prefer you to check the length of your side stand first, would hate for you to wait and pay for delivery to find out you already have the "short" side stand.

I was thinking the same thing when I responded to your original email.
I'll measure the stand this evening when I get home before ordering.

Thanks.

Simon,

My 961CR sidestand measures 8.625 inches (219 mm) from pivot bolt center to the middle of the foot plate.
So the new 209mm stand looks like the cure.
I'll call Gold Coast tomorrow and have them order part 6080047.
Thanks again for your assistance on this matter.

Regards

So Simon could you please comment on a US dealers complete inability to order an available part in 4 months. This is about the 20th time we've heard this. Us management is non-existant as most here will tell you!

I presume that Norton shortened the sidestand 12 months ago, because they recognised the design flaw in the earlier sidestand (i.e. it was too long), which has been highlighted numerous times on this forum and others.
Given that this is the case, and it is rectifying a design flaw, why are Norton not offering to have these fitted for owners (or sent out to owners), without them having to purchase them?

Parts evolve and change in all production vehicles. The old side stands function correctly and passed all homologation testing procedures on our tilt table, there is nothing wrong with the old side stands. However, parts change throughout the lifetime of production for various reasons. As I'm sure you could imagine, any production business would not survive if it were to send out a new part to all the current owners every time something changed.

I’m tipping right of center to put the stand up/down on the Dominator. It’s annoying. Does your stand look like mine?

Wow that sidestand is really hung!

Sorry, I don’t know if the Dominator sidestand is longer than the Command stand, different frame so it may be, but I just measured my old (original) Commando sidestand from the footing plate to the weld as you did – 8”. My replacement (shorter/newer) Commando sidestand on my bike measures 7.5” across the same area. I got the replacement stand because I had the exact same problem that you mentioned.

My dad made a custom side stand for the domi in Canada.

Why people don't hacksaw off 3/8" and weld it back on is beyond me , takes less then half an hour, 5 min. for the welder!

Does the new stand have the foot tang in a better location than current, which is right below the gear change?

No, I have a 2016 MKII Sport with the 7.5 inch stand and the one thing that is a nightmare is the location of the foot tang which is located right below the gear change. It can be a real issue to get to it. Have to go about it very slowly using the heal of my boot & forget about doing it after the sun has gone down! IMO it's a real design flaw.

Lex and Wodge, There used to be a lot of speak on this subject as well as kicking up the foot pegs when starting off. I found all of this true when I first got the bike but with enough use it just gets easier and becomes a non issue. I find the tang with the inside of my foot right by the big toe joint (ball of the foot) and never kick up the pegs anymore. You unconsciously get used to it. Keep riding!!!:)

Can someone tell me how you are posting your pictures ? I have measured my side stand and if you measure differently your number changes drastically. Is it possible that my November 2014 Sport already has the short side stand ? I am measuring 8.25in. from the middle of the pivot bolt to middle of the footplate. 209mm = 8.228 in. ? I thought the change was only a year ago ? that would be middle of 2016 ? Could it be that when they said a year ago it's really longer ago than that ? I am measuring along the side if the stand. If you measure on the front you get a much higher number. I will post my picture when I learn how to do it. Since the website upgrade I don't know how to post my pictures.
