Is it necessary to shim the crankshaft on the 850 motor? there seems to be no mention of it in the workshop manual and Mick Hemmings does not mention it in his video.

I have purchased the shims to go behind the outer part of the bearing and the crankcase. If shimming is required does it matter which way the crankshaft is moved - towards the drive side or the other way? Will it affect primary chain alignment in any way?

Thanks Don

PS I was going to aim for 0.012" end play - does that sound about right?

I have rebuild a few Norton motors over the years and have never shimmed one yet, I think people just over think things and all the motors, I have rebuild are all still on the road without any problems at all, like Jim said in the link he has seen shims on the drive side come apart and do damage.
My Manxman motor had a shim on the crank but when I rebuild it I won't be putting it back on, in my thinking its not needed, but the shim was put on as it was a full race bike for many years with very hi compression pistons, its been rebuilt for the road.
