Whilst sorting through some of my 40 + year's of collecting valuable norton spares (junk) during this lockdown I came across these followers
I my yooth I had a wideline commando with a big valve head triple S cam etc
I'd decided to push the motor a bit more by lightening the cam train
I severely lightened these cam followers, I'd heard about lightening them but never seen it done
I took the inner web right down to the base
I'd just done the work when my Paul dunstall tuning book turned up in the post
On the subject of follower lightening it states something like the last 1/4" should be left at the base
So I ended up not using them incase they broke especially with a triple S cam
Can anyone tell me if these are junk?
I've always assumed I ruined a perfectly good set of followers!

lifters
The lifters upon inspection looked reasonablely OK, except for the fact that the lightening process left a weak area. This area is between the hole drilled and the slot, where it is at it's thinnest. ALL 4 lifters were cracked at this point. The norton lifters are 73.3 gm. and the modified ones are 69.0 gm. It doesn't seem to be worth lightening the lifters if they can't take the strain. After all the cam is not that severe.!

That's an experiment that did not work out. 4 or so grams is nothing. I smoke that every day. Enjoy.
