Roller shielded

Hi Fanfan,
According to Mick Hemmings a shielded bearing is not needed since there is a bearing seal, #11, that protects the bearing. He does warn against using inferior quality bearings. Not sure what manufacturer AN sells.

I remember Brian Slark talking about bearings and cautioned us to avoid bearings made in Portugal.
He said they good wine, not good bearings.

FanFan,
No.11 is your oil seal for the outside of the gear box. I have only installed Roller # 10 SLEEVE GEAR BEARING OPEN without the shield and it has lasted over 40000 miles on my bike. I guess it could be done but gear oil is there in the box to get to the rollers so why not use it to cool it. Oil usually migrates out of the box from a worn 37 GEARBOX SPROCKET SPACER. Usually you will see a groove cut from the no.11 oil seal SLEEVE GEAR BEARING. And also through the main shaft center via the clutch push rod into the clutch plates. But there is a fix for that from Dynodaves clutch oil seal which is not shown in the parts drawings.
Cheers,
Thomas

The A2/316 single shield bearing (which is also a ball bearing not a "roller" bearing) was fitted to the pre-AMC "laydown" gearboxes (shield on the outside) because as already mentioned, that type of gearbox didn't have what could be described as a proper sleeve gear oil seal.

The Portuguese FAG brass-cage layshaft bearing is prone to failure but there's no problem with the Portuguese made 'Hemmings' 6203 TB replacement.

I also think that it is not necessary for them
Commando , otherwise the factory would have put a .clossed he must be less good cools by oil, especially that he has to undergo big efforts.

On my 850 MK3 it is 60 000 miles and no leak in the pine nut of exit of box. (N 33)

Thanks to alls for yours competents answers.

Happy new year 2018 :)

Are these bearings known to overheat? IE is gearbox oil needed to keep the bearing cool?

No the Main shaft sleeve gear bearings never gave problems. I would not run a sealed bearing in that location or any location in the AMC gearbox for that matter. but the lay shaft bearing that had the Portuguese brass cage gave problems from breaking up which would have dire consequences to gearbox and rider. The Mick Hemmings bearing is a good solution for a ball bearing replacement. The Super blend type Roller bearing 06-7710 that Andover sells is also good but you may need to play with shims with this style at the kick start shaft. See old brits here.

If you don't have a dial indicator as shown in the instruction procedure it might be better to get Mick's type. I personally use the roller type 06-7710. I have lots of measuring tools.;)

Thomas

The shielded sleeve gear bearing has one shield.

A2/316 SLEEVE GEAR BEARING (ONE SHIELD)

Roller shielded

"Shielded" (Z) bearings are not the same thing as "sealed" (RS) bearings.
The shielded bearing was supposed to be fitted with the single shield to the outside, the 'open' side would then be facing into the gearbox so the bearing would still be lubricated by gearbox oil.
