After coming back to the old girl after two weeks I found the oil tank contents had gone into the sump, no cause for worry. But after transfer of the oil I let her run to find white goo around the neck of the oil tank meaning moisture in the oil. She is stored in a warm dry garage???? I have to comment the oil was fairly fresh.

Next day I set the valves to find a faint browning on the rockers.
Another point I couldn't understand why the rocker caps (front) leaked so much oil untill I placed them on a glass plate but what I don't know is in the top end gasket set it looks like there are Alu. Washers provided for the caps but the manual shows none.
Has anybody used them as it would save munching the cap up with the nut.

Washers are the thing for surface preservation, on paint too. Get some very thin SS ones. Similar situation on the Enfield Interceptor and I
can say Ive never seen them used, they were tossed or lost by the original owners years ago. Was surprised to see them in the parts
diagram. Just had a look at the parts books for Norton, they apparently never used them.
...think of the savings!

Surface plate flattened some SH exhaust rocker covers recently, they are a common source of leaks.

I don't know how much you tighten the exhaust rocker nuts, but I have never done any direct 'damage' to the nut seat with them. The damage you can do is overtighten the nuts, which is what distorts the covers in the first place!

Assuming your gasket face is flat and the gasket is good, if you get a leak past the stud remove the stud and refit with sealant like Wellseal, because it will be coming up the threads.

There is only an aluminium washer on the inlet rocker, none on the exhaust. Are you sure those Aluminium washers you mention aren't intended for the rocker oil feed banjos?

I had a persistent leak from one exhaust rocker cover. It turned out to be porous. Changed it for a new one. No more problems.
