The latest task is an alloy fuel tank for the lightweight 920 Commando project.
I purchased a Thruxton R fairing for the project as they are such a beautifully shaped item. The problem with that is they are not at all universal. Most fairings just kind of terminate mid space but the Thruxton fairing flows right into the curvature of the fuel tank.
So it is necessary to make the fuel tank to the same profile as the Thruxton R tank, at least where the fairing ties in.
This is OK as it is a lovely little tank, can't think of a more pleasing shape.
It is a bit small at 14.5 litres, so I'll expand it some ( Interstate) and add a bit of Roadster shape as well. Could be a real Dog's breakfast!
We'll see.
Started by taking shapes from the Thruxton tank and building a buck to that, with some expansion included. I'm looking for 17 litres or so, about 175 mile range.

Top piece roughed out. This one put up a fight. I got frustrated with pounding and resorted to using lots of hand pressure over the back of a wooden chair to stretch the spine curve in. That worked but the chair eventually broke!

Making hard work out of that aren’t you Glen? Looks like an easy job to me

Do we see an alloy cradle in the bike in the background? Is that your lightweight project?

Interesting idea with the MDF shocks.

You gonna start a proper build thread for it? You should. It’s a public service duty in times like this !

Juicy thread Glen!! I for one will be following the build of this beauty for sure.... Surely you have a cNw e-start in mind for this, right? Not exactly fitting the extra lite theme but definitely seems worth its weight.

Some people just have to do things the hard way. :D
I agree with FE, this needs a proper build thread.
And don't leave anything out.....

This conversation is going off the rails, and pushing it even further off the rails.

Its gone very lumberjacky.

our lumberjacks are of much finer stock than you might suggest... you know, we've been doing this for a while and not just in BC... oh ya sorry bout getting of track...
